Has anyone taking the gasket on the hood and cut a piece off right in front of the air intake so it can breathe in air, or by doing this would be bad news to the air intake?

I was looking because it seems the gasket in the front part is cutting off any type of air into the engine.

I can't speak for the SHO front end grille backing, but in the EB Flex, it covered the entire back of the top Grille. This meant that all of the air going thru radiator, or up to air intake inlet on drivers side, had to come in from the bottom grille. I would guess that this has something to do with aerodynamics. On my EB Flex, I installed a custom Carriage Works bar grille, that required removing the black plastic panel that the factory 3 chrome bar grille was attached to. So, now I can stick my hand thru the air inlet hole next to the radiator on the drivers side and stick my fingers out thru the custom grille.

Perhaps you or other SHO owners can post close-up pix of this area.

The radiator on the sho covers every inch of air from the grill. Ford made the Sho with a snorkel where it seems that the air is sucked in between the hood (when it is closed) and the plastic piece that is on top of the radiator holding the front grill. The Hood has two gaskets stopping in coming air/rain into the engine. One stopping where the cold air intake can work cutting of the warm air, but the other gasket is cutting off the air from coming in to the snorkel.

Seems to me you would pick up additional airflow by cutting that #2 gasket in the area of the snorkle. You can always replace it with a new one for later on.
