Tonight Lincoln dealers had a "star-studded event" going on that I heard about and I wanted to see what it was all about and I was driving by my local L/M dealership so I decided to stop in. There were more people in a Lincoln/Mercury dealership than I've ever seen before! It wasn't packed, but busy. They had free snacks and drinks too :woo-hoo:.

Well anyways, when I came in they asked me if I wanted to register and go for a test drive, and so I said sure. They asked me in what and of course I said MKS with EcoBoost and mentioned that I wanted to compare it to the new SHO . So then a salesman grabbed some keys and a plate and said see you back and 20 mins! He just let me have it and it was a loaded "Ultimate" package EB MKS too.

My first impression is WOW. The first thing I notice is it feels much more open than the SHO, because the SHO is a bit claustrophobic with its cockpit style dash and center counsel IMO. Of course it was fast, but I didn't get to open it up too much/often because I was driving around Dearborn right near the police station in 35mph zones. Like I said, it had all of the options, including the double panoramic sunroof, as well as the the auto-park assist. I tried out the auto parallel park feature in a tight spot and it did it flawlessly, even though I was a little worried it was going to hit one of the cars at first. The THX stereo was REALLY nice too, much better than the Sony stereo in the SHO IMO. One other thing is the leather seats in the MKS are VERY comfy and I think feel much better than the SHO's. They didn't have massagers in them though and IDK if they're available in the MKS. IIRC the MKS now uses the same leathers as Jags too.

Mechanically it felt just like the SHO though, and pulled hard up to 70, even though they claim it has 10 less horsies, but with the same torque IIRC. I think it road a bit softer, but also didn't feel floaty or have a lot of body roll. It was a nice balance, and I think the EB cars get sportier suspension too.

So basically it's an "ultimate package" premium SHO and the price reflects that as the one I drove was $53!:oogle: On average the MKS EB is about $10k more than the SHO, but it does come with more standard features, as well as features unavailable on the SHO, like the park-assist. But a $10k premium?? IDK if it's worth it. You could do a lot of mods with $10k...

Awesome write up. I was also curious about how the two compared myself. Looks like I may end up hitting up the Lincoln dealer too and take a peek. :thankyou: for the info partner!

IIRC, Jag uses Connolly leather; Lincoln uses Bridge of Weir leather in the MKS.

That's what I was given to understand--the EBs all have upgraded suspensions. From what I heard about the testing, the MKS needed it (something about popping half-shafts out of the transaxle  ).

You could, but it all depends on what you want in the car. The Lincoln is definitely more luxury-oriented than sporty, so you get luxury touches like nicer (or, at least, more expensive) leather, thicker glass and more insulation for better sound deadening, the THX sound system, etc. I have a feeling that the SHO is more in line with what most of us around here want in a car, but there are certainly some who'd go the MKS route...

The seats were one thing I wish was different... ie more ass cushion. The "suede" inserts are too much like fabric too. I agree the SHO is a bit claustrophobic, but for me, I like the cockpit effect. I don't know how the other Taurus models are, but I don't think it wouldn't be family friendly. I consider the SHO as a luxury sports sedan and the MKS as an über luxury sedan with some kick ass power. Like you said, for $10K, you can do a lot of other things. That's why I went with the 401a option package. The other options are nice, but not for that kind of $$$. Thanks for the review.

I'm not positive, but I think that's a result of the Peltier device and associated ducting Lincoln uses to heat/cool the seat.

I'm not sure about the "uber" part, but I think you pretty much nailed that one to the wall.

That's one other thing I forgot to mention, it is dead silent in that car if you turn the stereo off. It's even quieter than the SHO and I didn't even think that was possible. If money wasn't a concern I would would prefer the MKS over the SHO, but the price is just too much IMO. I really like the look of the MKS Sport too, it has blacked out lights and trim, larger front valance, lower ride height, and really nice 20" wheels that fit the car well, even though I'm not a huge chrome fan.

Well, I would consider Ford/Chevy in the luxury class, Lincoln/Caddy in "über" luxury, and Aston Martin/Maserati in the ultra luxury class. Just to explain where I was going with that. I wonder if Chevy has/is coming out with anything?
