Lurking around SHOs for a while and finally tested a 2017 non-pp today with 7k. I have to say I was quite disappointed with the get up and go . Seemed laggy and not exhilarating like the MKZ I tested. It was in sport mode and the dealer said this is what they feel like.

I thought this car was kind of a sleeper . Was there some kind setting the dealer didn't know to set to make it launch.

No setting, you can disable traction control... the real benefit of sleeper status happens after you wake it up with a tune... very few cars out there can get the same bang per dollar on a tune...

At the end of the day it’s still a 4400lb 4 door sedan with an extra bit of pep...

Would disabling traction control make it launch better on a non-pp?

Yes. When the wheels start spinning the car will drop boost until the wheels hook up with traction control on...

I see. Maybe that's the trick although the wheels weren't spinning at all . It just seems sluggish and then spooled up after the lag .

If you punched it, and there was lag like it didn’t want to take off or “fell on its face”, and then it felt like the car came alive then that is 100% traction control.

You can’t just slam the pedal to the floor in the 3.5 Ecoboost. It will fall on its face. We have two of them. Wife as an Ecoboost Flex. You need to roll into the throttle. The gas makes a big difference too. The dealers put the cheapest crap they can find in their inventory. Put premium in it, and it really makes a difference in how it comes off the line even stock. I have a coyote powered mustang too, so I’m used to a low 4 second 0-60, and my SHO still feels plenty fast stock—a **** of a lot more comfortable too. Drive the SHO for more than just a few minutes. I bet you’re gonna want one. We never drive the Mustang anymore actually now that we have the SHO. Been toying with selling it.

OK that's a good point about the octane being an impediment but I don't understand what you mean about rolling into the throttle? Why wouldn't I just mash the accelerator to do a 0-60 ?

You need to give the turbos time to spool up by steadily building exhaust pressure. Instead of just jamming it to the floor try smoothly flooring it over like a second. If you’ve ever driven a turbo diesel, it’s the same technique. It will accelerate much more quickly, even with the slight delay until you’re at full throttle. You can power brake too to build boost before launching. I’ve never tried it in the SHO, but it makes my old Powerstroke push me back in the seat.

OK I'll try smoothly accelerating for the first second .

Really want to love this car and hope the grin factor will come from the above tips .

7K should be broken in by now. Try premium (93 octane) and do the steps that others have described. I have a low 13 second 1/4 mile with the LMS tuning stage 1. The gentle power increase is a trick to master but once you get the hang of it the throttle response and performance will be much better.

7K mileage most likely a dealer demo or some one got my idea and traded the SHO for a Explorer Sport.

I too test drove a few awhile back and said isn’t much better than my limited Taurus not gonna spend the extra money for the SHO. However the 3 rd one I bought and not sorry I did def change the fuel to 93 octane if u can. On the hi way u can pass anybody anytime u want without a doubt , get out of people’s way in a hurry. I love it , my wife loves it and in know way does she even really care about cars. It’s funny she waves bye bye to the other cars when I go into pass mode. My tunes are on the way so I can’t wait to feel that power. Definitely give it another drive.

What you need to do is get on the converter and launch it. Traction off, sport mode, power brake it until 2k rpm. Release the brake and let her eat.

I can get my to launch in boost now, and that is a huge difference. However, mine is tuned as well.

I put 87 octane in my 2013 PP once. Once. It was the worst week of my life. Commuting 5 days uses the entire tank.

I was so happy to put 93 back in that weekend, I was like a kid getting a whole cake to himself on his birthday.

Did the MKZ have the 3.0 400hp motor? SHO would feel a little slower then since that car makes more power and is lighter.

Yes it was but running 87 and didn't require any of the previously mentioned tricks.

It's safe to assume both cars have 87 in them. The MKZ is rated at 400hp (on 93) and the SHO is 365hp (on 93) and I'd expect the MKZ to feel livelier because of the power/weight difference. I've run 87 and 93 in my car and didn't really notice much of a difference. Now a 93 tune vs 91 or lower, very noticeable.

As mentioned, the #1 change you can do on these cars are a tune. If you pick the right tuner, it will transform the car into how it should have been from the factory.
