My car has been whining since I bout it 3000 miles ago. I replaced the serp tensioner bearing but it kept whining. Today I attempted to reset the tension on the timing belt. I found my crank pulley with no colored marks only a V shaped indent and a \_/ shaped indent separated by maybe 45°. I pulled it and the lower cover anyway, the dowel pin was at about 1oclock and the belt was tight on the front. I felt the spring and it was loose, I could easily move it up and down on the tensioner. I held the tensioner with a hex key, loosened the 14mm, and edged a little tennsion off. The spring was still able to be moved up and down the same amount. Upon reassembly it still whines.
1. How do i do the reset with a pulley that does not have the colored marks?
2. Is the spring bad or am I that over tensioned?

Either the spring has broken or was incorrectly installed. You should fix that first, and then just let the spring set the tension on the belt, and tighten the 14mm nut. There is a procedure out there somewhere, but it's pretty simple.

As far as the pulley goes, is it stock? If so, the little indentions are what you're looking for.

You dont set the timing with the crank damper, you use the timing belt pulley. There is an indention on the timing belt pulley as well as the 2 cam pulleys. If they are lined up when you put the belt on then thats it.

Im not worried about timing, Im not putting a belt on it for another 5000 miles (120k). Its just that the instructions for reseting the tensioner say to set the crank at a certain position using a yellow mark that my crank pulley does not have. I have sho shop alt wp and ps UD pullies but i think the crank is stock it just has no yellow or white marks. Can I pull the tensioner without causing timing issues? Id like to check the spring situation and inspect the bearing.

I think you can. I'm willing to bet the bearing is going to sound dry, which is probably one source of your noise.

it is possible but challenging to pull the tensioner pulley off without having the timing belt come off or slip on one of the sprockets.

the instructions tell you to orient the crank in the proper location to have the cam lobes loaded the optimal way so the cams are not trying to rotate as you try to tension the belt. you can tension the belt at any orientation, you just need to make sure you have the top side of the belt tight also.

imho, that spring on the mtx tensioner is not that important - you can get the belt set properly without it if you are careful.

Okay well id like to take the tesnioner off and check it out, which mark on the crank pulley do i use and where do i put it to have the tension needed to remove the tensioner with the belt on? According the chad i have the tensioner on backwards. It could be the pulley bearing, that's what i thought it was, but everyone with a timing belt whine has tension issues.
