More than likely a sensor. It is near the thermostat and I believe it is called the ECT. This has caused cold temp readings for me in the past. I would start there as they are cheap.

A search on this subject will yield you alot of helpful reading. :thumb:

The ECT tells the computer how warm/cold the engine is. It does nothing for the temp gauge. There is second sensor for the temp gauge, which sits in the same are as the ECT. Do a search on Autozone.com and you'll be able to get the part number that you need.

replace them both; they're cheap, and a worn out ECT can make you run rich without even knowing it

Good time to go to an aftermarket temp gauge, very easy to install, only big deal is getting the line through the firewall and finding a place to mount the gauge.

But yeah, the sender's go bad easily; they vary their resistance readings to move the gauge needle. Just put some teflon tape on the threads of the new one before you put it in.
