I couldn't believe it myself.

I made a few changes in the SHO and look where we got last Sunday.. 5th top time in a field of 102:

Autocross Results
(That's me in Prepared Sedan and TOAM. Raw times ranked at the very end.)

Specifically, I made changes to make the car handle more neutral. I put stiffer springs in front (went from 450 to 550's) and a smaller swaybar in the rear (from 26mm to 21mm; I am not running a front sway bar). Also, I softened the rear Koni rebound rate a tad. My goal was to reduce body roll and prevent the inside rear tire from lifting in aggressive turns. Neutral handling is definitely where it's at.

It paid off. Big time. The Slow Heavy Object remained planted throughout. I could really drive her hard and fast through the turns and slaloms, and I was amazed at how easily she'd go where I pointed.

Everything worked in harmony. Know the feeling of skiing downhill real fast, winding effortlessly and rhythmically through a series of moguls? That's kind of what it felt like.

I also really, really focused ******* better technique. Specifically, maximizing the straights and braking as little and as late as possible. Choosing the line which required the least steering input. Steering by modulating the throttle. These are all processes that in my case need more refinement. It's an ongoing thing.

But what an intense rush. Lordy, how I love the way this car dances! :)

Glad to hear it! Are you still sticking with 7" springs?

Some of us are running 500/350 8"/10"

I'm hoping that this setup will provide a very neutral feel when I install my coilovers in a few months.

Keep posting your experiences! I love reading them!

Excellent man! Great results. I need to work on my suspension balance I can tell.

Are you running the stock IPT setup? Do you remember which rates/heights they are? IIRC, they were pretty short springs with a really high spring rating.

Springs are short, that is a fact. Like 6in springs, 450F/300R, I think. Not sure about either though.

Here is a list of car he BEAT, AWESOME!

Honda S2000, Mini Cooper S, Subaru Impreza, Toyota MR2, Acura RSX-S, Honda CRX SI, Porsche 944, Audi S4, Toyota Supra, Mazda Rx7, Subaru WRX, Mitsu Lancer, Volkswagen GTi, Mazda Miata, BMW M Roadster, Volkswagen R-32, Nissan Sentra SE-R, Toyota Corrolla GTS.

In fact, the ONLY cars with faster times that day were a Mazda RX-7, a Porsche 911, a Zinc Formula Vee and a GMC Syclone. That is awesome driving man, way to prepare the car.

Thanks, guys.

Yes, I am still using 7" springs. Trying to keep the weight down as much as possible. Right now they are 550F/450R and I'll probably just stay there, although I am tempted to try 650F/450R just to see if my times will get better.

Next up are Stage I cams and Kumho Ecsta V710's on 14.9 lb. Team Dynamics rims.

Then we can SHO the Porsches who's boss. LOL!!!

The same guy drove the Mazda RX-7 and the GMC Syclone. He's been autocrossing since 1988. The guy in the 911 is also a veteran, I think over 10 years. I don't know much about the driver in the Formula Vee.

This is my 1st year autocrossing, and I've never been to a driving school although I plan to soon. For me to finish up there with those guys speaks VERY HIGHLY of the Taurus SHO as an autocross car, when properly set up.

That's pretty close to the 500/350 0/23mm setup I had on my silver car, which was a dream to drive on the track. Just a tad bit on the loose side, but very predictable and very responsive to corrective input.

I wish this freaking orange blob would behave the same way... :banghd:

Congrats on the good results. Welcome to the world of SHO suspension tuning.

BTW, be careful about going much beyond where you are with the front springs or you'll be in Koni revalving territory.

Good point. It's already bordering on the pogo effect with the 550's, even with max dampening on the Koni's.

Just curious, how much does Koni charge to revalve?

congrats man, you are now officially my role model. if i ever finish in the top 5 with this car someone's gonna have to tranquilize me. it's odd that you went to 550ls springs because i was just at our sports car club meeting and a veteren there sudjested going something in the neighborhood of 600 front and 450 rear on a SHO. i guess he was right:salute:

just remember.... when everyone was saying that the SHO would be out gunned and couldn't cut it as an autocrosser. Keep proving them wrong:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Hey man, thanks for the kind words. I just wish there were more SHO autocrossers out here. Being the only one out there gets a little lonely..

I'll have someone take pics next meet. With the 550 front springs, there is still a small amount of body roll but definitely much better than before. Also the inside rear wheel no longer lifts.
