I assume you're talking about removing the compressor completely and getting a shorter belt. It is possible, but there are a few things you must know.

1. There are 4 bolts holding the compressor on. Two of them are shared with the alternator bracket.

2. You will need to fabricate spacers for the alternator bracket to take the place of the comp.

3. Most important! The A/C compressor also adds structural integrity to the long cast engine mount bracket. I learned this the hard way. Mine fractured completely. I welded in reinforcement steel to compensate. All is good now.

Wow, i didn't have any problems taking the compressor out. I didn't think that we had to touch my alternator bracket either, but I'm not sure about that. It was pretty simple. Do you know which belt you need? I can't remember the part number right now.

It was a long time ago when I did it. I'll look tonight to refresh my memory. I'll post some pics too. There was definitely an issue structurally to the long cast bracket (that the front engine mount is bolted to) that caused it to break on me after I removed the compressor.

I'll try to get a p/n off of the belt that I'm using, if it's not worn. I just used a rope around the pulleys to find the correct length. Murray's might look at you funny if you tell them you need a belt of a certain length, so I went to a small local shop. They had a belt that was close enough in length.

Here's a pick from above and below showing the cast bracket with the welded reinforcement plate as well as the spacers for the absence of the a/c comp.
