This probelm began on friday and has gotten worse. I will be driving and the tach will jump about an extra 1000 rpms and stay in that area. the engine its self stays at the same speed, only the tach jumps. If I keep driving the car the tach will eventually go back to normal. But it has started to happen more often. any ideas, whats going on?

Tachs have microcircuitry in them that does go bad. I would replace the tach. It just plugs into the cluster. Once you get the shield off, just yank on the bitch.

my tach did somethin similar to that at one point, it would rev to like 10k 11k but the engine would be that high. it was a loose ground wire. id check for a wire befor replacing the tach entirely

It would seem that your crank sensor died on you. I doubt it's your tach if there are other symptoms with it.

Edit: My bad, yeah, it is the cam sensor, not the crank sensor. Got mixed up there.

The tach runs off the Cam sensor, My tach did the same as you are saying and was thinking a bad tach, but machanic at Ford said that it ran off the cam sensor. The sensor died a short time later, car got hard to start just before it died. Tach is working fine now with new sensor.

alright I'm changing out the cam sensor. But when I took the old one off, it was full of engine oil inside of the sensor and where it goes. Is their suppose to be oil there?

no - there is not supposed to be oil in there. There is a oil seal back in there - how did it look? Either the oil seal is bad, or the valve cover has a slight leak wherer it goes over the cam shaft "****"
