Hello all-

2011 Black SHO with Nav (I'll get around to getting a good signature).

I want to remove the Sync APIM from my Taurus- long story short, my 2010 F-150 is having Sync issues and I'd like to swap them to troubleshoot.

I can pinpoint the APIM- if you remove the rear panel from the center console, it's mounted in there, just below the air vent.

I spent about an hour this evening removing and re-installing numerous trim pieces to try to get to the mount for the APIM, but no luck.

If anyone can share that specific removal/install instructions, much appreciated. I live in the shadow of Glass House more or less, but I've called in a lot of favors to friends with Dealerconnection access, and want to save it for a big deal (like when it comes time to turn in my lease :) ).

Thanks!

Here is the text from the factory service manual for removing the APIM from the 2011 Taurus:

Removal and Installation

NOTE: It is necessary to record the current Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) software and hardware level when a new APIM is being installed to make sure that the new component is the same version as the component being replaced.

  • Retrieve and record the current APIM software and hardware level. For additional information, refer to Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Software Level Check in this section.
  • Remove the floor console. For additional information, refer to Section 501-12 .
  • Remove the floor console rear trim panel by pulling straight back to disengage the clips.
  • Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  • Disconnect the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) electrical connector and the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable.
  • Remove the 4 screws and the APIM .
  • To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  • If a new APIM is being installed, program the APIM to the correct software level. For additional information, refer to Section 418-01 .

If you want a PDF of the section with photos, as well as section 501-12, send me a Private Message with an e-mail address for you that I can send the PDFs to.

Have you already confirmed the software and hardware levels match? This seems like a lot of effort to go to if there's a chance the swap won't tell you anything due to possible incompatibilities....

If there is any difference whatsoever in hardware and software configurations between the SHO and the F150, down to and including rear-view cameras, it's not going to work. I believe they're even VIN-coded.

You can swap it, but I doubt it's going to do much for you.

How the heck do you remove the counsole? I found the APIM Module ok but do you have to remove the whole counsole to get at it?

You have to remove the upper portion of the center console to get the Front Control Interface Module off (the touch sensitive buttons). you also have to remove the side pannels. The left side that has the start stop button and the other that has the trunk button. You may have to remove the instrument panel bezel too.

What kind of sync problems are you having? Did you update sync in your truck? Master reset?

No, the module is not behind where the screen would be if I had one. This is a 2011 Taurus... It is located in the rear of the console behind and under the air vents. It was a hassle but I managed to get it out. It has 4 #15 Torx screws that hold it in. Getting the computer plug undone was a problem as well but I won!
