Hello. So this past week, I just picked up a new to me 2010 SHO. So far I'm in love with it and I am just enjoying finally owning a car that I've wanted for a long time.

My question today is concerning the Sync system and my phone. I registered on the Ford website and was told that there was a firmware update for my car. So I downloaded and installed it. While it seems to mostly be working ok, I'm not sure if it is working 100%.

When I first got the car and paired my iPhone X, I could stream music through Bluetooth. When I shut off the car and got in later, it would automatically connect and continue playing where it left off. One thing it didn't do was display the MP3 tag info. Since the update, I now see the song title and artist. However, when I turn the car off and back on, the media portion defaults to line in every time. Now I have to manually select Bluetooth to get it to play again. Is this normal with the update?

Another thing is that it tells me my phone does not support the texting options of sync. Even though it works fine in my fiance's 2016 Edge. Does this older sync really not fully work with an iPhone?

Lastly, is there any way to upgrade it to a newer sync system from a newer taurus, or is it too integrated to do something like that?

Thanks in advance and I look forward to using this forum in the future!

Do you have the touch screen with the hard drive based Navigation or the standard sync without touch screen? My wife and I have a 2012 Mustang with the touch screen. I just installed the update too so I’ll see if ours does the same thing. I’m pretty sure you can’t put My Ford Touch or Sync 3 on the hard drive based Sync touch screen equipped cars. There are just too many integrated systems to make it work, but there is a kit for Mustangs to put aftermarket double DIN systems in. The Taurus uses the same system so there probably is one for it too.

Sync is not all the same. Updates to the system and your phone can cause things you had to be taken away like your first born baby. And no one cares to hear you cry.... because deal with it.

too dramatic? Really thats how it works. OOOOHHH update, completes update. Phone incompatible......

Anywho. You can't compare your 2010 to the 2016 unless they are the same sync system and software versin, gen 1, gen 2 or gen 3 currently. Even then, there may be a difference. Between model years.

SYNC was a Microsoft system. Sync never has really seemed to like Apple products. Sounds like your S.O.L. at the moment.

I don't know what 2010 is. If you have buttons along the screen (physical buttons) you have gen 1 sync with nav. If the screen is all touch screen with 4 quadrants you have gen 2. You don't have gen 3 because that came out in 2016.

Yes you can upgrade to different hardware, but like anything, you gotta pay to play. There a quite a few posts on jumping generation/hardware levels.

I believe SNYC2 came out in 2013.

I have not seen anyone go from SYNC gen 1 to SYNC2 or 3. Not sure if it is not possible or just more work than it's worth. SYNC2 to SYNC3 is different hardware but has been done(actually planning this myself)

Don’t see how you’d go from Sync 1 based system to My Ford Touch or above. I’ve never seen anybody do it in any Ford. The Taurus instrument cluster is different. There are no screens in a 10-12 in the cluster. The center screen is a different size. I’m pretty familiar with Mustangs, and the harnesses are completely different in them between S197 with Sync 1 and S550 with My Ford Touch or Sync 3, so it’s probably the same in the Taurus since they use the same APIM, screen, etc. Now Sync 2 to 3 is easy, but the op definitely has Sync 1 with or without the touchscreen. He hasn’t said which yet, though.

Sorry for the delay in getting back. Work has been crazy lately. Yes I have the touchscreen with navigation and hard drive.

For the heck of it I tried a master reset and still made no difference on the auto playback via Bluetooth. So I'm assuming that update broke it. Using a USB memory stick with mp3s on it works fine when I stop and start the car. So for now I'm just going that route. Does anyone know if you can sideload music to the interval hard drive or upgrade it for a larger one?

Thanks for all the input so far!

You can do anything as long as you throw enough money at it, right?

The only thing I would be worried about is if the CAN input to wake up and shut down, and door ajar are the same. Otherwise a GEN 3 already has everything internal to work. And due to the LVDS cable the APIM and the FDIM do not have to be in the same spot. You could order a cable from a new navigator to get more length.
