I'm interested in switching to synthetic oil for my 92 SHO. 134k miles on her. I have read that it is necessary to change the seals and gaskets prior to doing this. Is this true?? and can anyone recommend a synthetic oil that works well with the SHO??

Thanks

Ken

If you have bad oil leaks , it will leak even more due to the fact that Syntech is "thinner" oil. Other then that , It's your choice.

A lot of the reason you get more leaks is due to the fact synthetic will clean out deposits uncovering leaks. Synthetic is more "slippery", however, just like regular oil, you can get it in different weights.

True dat.

I was refering "thinner" compared to the same weight though (reg 10w30 vs syntech 10w30), but I forgot to mention it.

It was said above that it cleans better, which is true. I changed over and after the first oil change it to synthetic it was BLACK. Now I'm into my 3rd oil change with synthetic and it is almost as clean as it went in.

There is no need to change gaskets and seals, but if you have any leaks now they may get a little worse if you switch to a PAO synthetic like Mobil One, Amsoil, or Royal Purple. If the engine is tight, a switch to Mobil One should be fine. A more conservative approach would be to switch to a synthetic like Castrol or Pennzoil which are really highly refined conventional oils and do not use PAO base stock.
