I just did this on a 2.5 Contour SE, which is the exact same thing except for horsepower.
Drain tranny first!
Drop the exhaust. I did the whole thing because it was easier than disconnecting rusty bolts.
Drop the subframe. Tie the steering rack up so it doesn't put too much pressure on the lines. Tie the radiator/cooling fan/condenser up with the pegs that poke through the core support. It's got the 4 bolts holding it to the car, a bunch holding the steering on, the front and rear roll resistor, and a few little PS line brackets and stuff.
Take the struts/knuckles/axles off. Easy once the subframe is gone. Take off the intermediate shaft too, it makes it easier.
Support the engine under the oilpan with something sturdy (not jack stands!) I used both front tires with a 2x10 on top.
Remove the air cleaner/battery, then the tranny mount, then the starter. Remove misc stuff like shift tower/cables, electrical wires and sensors, clutch line, tranny cooler lines, etc.
Unbolt the tranny bellhousing bolts. Use lots of extensions and u-joints, you can get all of them.
Floor jack under the tranny, wiggle it off the engine, and drop it down. Reverse steps for installation. Mind the driver's side front brake line when you drop the tranny.
I removed and replaced the tranny over a week in the evening after work (2-3 hours a day). I'd be much faster the second time around, I'd never worked on a Contour before and there was a lot of rusty bolts.
It's a lot tighter than an MTX SHO, I don't like working on it at all.
Why encourage him?
another thing to consider...there's not a problem in this world that cannot be solved with the generous application of high explosives.
