Summer tires... best deal?

I would ditch those two tires and get four new ones. It sucks having to mix two new tires with two old ones because you get cheated out of enjoyment of the "new tire experience". Those two old ones are worn enough to ditch without feeling like you are throwing good money away. On the contrary, the enjoyment you will get out of four new tires will be worth the extra expense.

new tires put on rear ???

Actually I just read in article in the latest Car&Driver and they wrote about how new tires are tested before they are available for public sale. One of the things they tested was new tires mixed with old tires. They did a few wet road tests and found that the newer tires were safer in the rear. But it is your call.
I think my next set of tires will Be either the Yokohama's or Kumho's.

Someone else told me those 2 goofs on "Car Talk" (PBS radio) agree that newer tires should be put in the rear on a FWD auto. WHY ??? It seems as if a car was to hydroplane on a wet surface you would want your drive (front) tires to have the best tread/traction. RIGHT ???

You want the rear to have the best traction under hydroplane conditions. If the front has better traction than the rear then you turn into a spinning turtle.

Has anyone tried any other summer tires since this topic was active? Or does anyone else want to chip in?

Additional info: I live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Our springtime is filled with nice warm weather one day, light snow the next, and rain every once in a while. It's mainly nice in the spring, but you do get a little snow (usually doesn't stay on the ground) and some rain. Summer is nice (duh) and fall is cool weather, sometimes some premature snowstorms, but hopefully I'd have my winter tires on by then.

I don't put as many miles on my car as the next guy. This past year (which was my first year of ownership) I have put only 6k miles on the SHO. I'm not sure how much of that was summertime miles. According to this data, I guess tread wear isn't the biggest issue, but it still is a desire.

If you want to spend a little more $$...then I'd opt for the BF-Goodrich KDW's... I absolutly love my set. Great traction and grip in corners. I now have about 8k on my current set...and I'll definately get another 20 or so out of them the way I drive...with occational "spirited" cornering...
