I need to know,what is it exactly that makes an MTX SHO subframe different from a regular Taurus?
It so happens I need one for my '91.
Is there one reasonably priced close to Yakima WA 98902?
Or, can a regular subframe be modified to fit?

The 4 subframe mounting bolts are in the same position so the slo/sho subframes will physically swap. It's just that all the stuff attached to the subframe(motor/trans mounts for example) are in different positions. It's not worth the hassle to try to adapt one from a slo. There's plenty of SHO's in the junkyard and most will have good subframes.

I agree with olympic. I used to have a 88 SLO and the subframe was real close to my 89 SHO's. Whatever u do make sure you upgrade the subframe bolts. I was driving the SLO one day and the whole subframe dropped to the ground when the bolts snapped.

I heard a rumor that a frame from a SLO will work- if it's the 2.5 manual,(89 to 95).
Any truth to this?
This info from a couple wrecking yards.

When comparing an 89 and 93ATX subframe the only difference was the tranny mount. Several inches difference in size. The 2 motor mount holes looked similar, I did not actually measure any dimensions. The post about the 2.5 manual makes sense, the trannys are almost identical in appearance. Call a Ford dealer and ask for the part #s for the two and compare.

The drivetrain in the ATX was moved forward and to the passenger side to make room for the tranny. So the mounting locations may look the same but they are in slightly different locations.

The 2.5 subframe may work. That car was available with the MTX4 so it may well be the same as the MTX SHO. But the 2.5's were pretty rare so it may be as hard to find a subframe out of one of those as an SHO.

After speaking with the wrecking yards, I attempted to verify the info thru my two local Ford dealers.
I became frustrated after they admitted they were clueless about the SHOs! This from both the service writers and parts people.
