Hello all,

Sorry I posted this up in the sticky by accident.

Well I picked up my 99 V8 SHO today and I only have one problem. When I come to a stop, the car's RPM falls to zero and then goes back up. It feels as though the car is about to shut off but it doesn't. While driving the car it runs really smooth.

During my test drive, the car did not do this and the dealer put the car in the shop because a SES came on while test driving the car. The light is not on now and the dealer said they gave the car a tune up.

I'm thinking it's a sensor which initially triggered the SES. I do hope it's a sensor and not something more serious. I have a warranty on the car so I'm taking it to my shop on Saturday but I would like to have a head's up on this problem.

Anyone?

If it were a gen1 or 2 I would say IAB or EGR or both. Since it's been "Tuned up" I would start by looking at the IAB.

Again, this is a gen1 or 2 im talkin about....

In my opinion, a true "tune up" requires removing the runners and replacing the spark plugs and cleaning the intake just to name a few.

I SERIOUSLY doubt most, if any, "stealers" actually tune up a V8 SHO correctly.

Just my .02....

mine kind of has the same issue no that my motor is back in the car.. it kindof shutters/miss's whatever you call it.. but i do have a ses on and its only for the emissions. the miss is so inconsitent that it couldnt be a coil could it be a tune up.. (atleast all 8 pluges) they are pretty old but they dont have many miles on them.. about 3 years old and didnt look bad when i put the car back togethere.

with the emissions code i was told its most likey a vac leak havent got the chance to check that out yet but did fix my runner leaks (i hate thos coupler, has anyone used anything else for them. i was thinking like some turbo or supercharger Intercooler coupler, only if i can get it that small)

i was thinking somthing like this but in the right size...if its made that small..

Why do you hate the rubber intake couplers?

Maybe you've got one loose (possible) or a cracked one (again, possible)

yes they are old but none are loose i have checked and checked.. and for me if they were like 1/2 longer life would be pie when removing the plenum and runners..

Well I took her to the shop and they told me to take it back to the dealer. They also told me not to continue to drive the car because it could be other problems. Because there is no SES light on, they don't want to take a guess at what the problem could be. The shop has ruled out the coils and it could be the MAF but since it's not showing any codes, they simply don't want to deal with the car.

The only problem with this is that I wanted to attend the annual picnic in Hershey today. But if I'm harming my car by continuing to drive it, I don't want to take the chance. Looks like I'm going to be in the house this weekend. The best part about this is that the car is under warranty still. The dealer told me not to buy any parts for the car and just bring it back to him on Monday so that he can send it back to his shop.

My old car acts funny with idling; drops till the lights flicker, and then surge up to 1500. But it seems to be dependent on the weather and it's not bad enough for me to waste time on.

As far as your problem; throttle position sensor? Cam position sensor? I could be completely off.

After driving for a few minutes, if you put it in park, will the tach climb up to, like, 3000rpm?

The slow climbing of rpm sounds like TPS or TPS wiring problem.

No my rpm never go above the 1 while idle or when I shift from park to drive.

Like Ian, it sounds to me like one of the coils is starting to act up. This could be an on and off thing for a very long time before it tosses a good code at you. I suggest not worrying too much about it and just driving. Intermitent problems are always the most frustrating, but often the only solution is to wait until they happen enough to get a better handle on the cause.

Do let us know what the dealership comes up with on Monday.

Personally when it comes to coils you either put up with various bad ones until they are all replaced or you put new coils in now.

I would suggest 4 new coils for the back then use the used ones to swap in on the front. Look for cracks on the body of the coil on the connector side. Or the rubber boots get a small hole in them somehow.

At any rate the idea of putting up with it till it fails completely kind of takes the fun out of driving a SHO. I did this until I just bought 8 new ones. I think you will find the new after market ones are a bit better made than the OEM Motorcraft ones. About half the after market ones are nothing but the Motorcraft ones in a different box. Something to avoid IMHO.

Took car back to dealer today. The shop told him that they knew it had a misfire in cylinder 3 but thought if they cleared the code, it would go away. :snicker: I've held back my temper from these guys since I brought the car. However, what kind of fool would clear the codes and think the problem would go away? :oogle: I'm very upset but don't know how to express my anger without telling them to F off and give me my money back. The shop also told the the dealer that they couldn't work on the car today because the intake is too hot to touch and it would have to wait 24 hours before they could touch the car. I'm about to burst a blood vessel right now. Instead, I just smile and say ok. I have no doubt that they will hold my car for 48 hours and tell me everything is ok when in fact they will do nothing for my car.

Someone please tell me how to deal with this type of situation because I'm about to become really upset with these people and they are not going to like what I will do. It simply doesn't pay to be nice these days nor a female whom people think they can push over. Lord help me.

I think a full blow dissatisfied customer outburst in front potential or current customers would work. Of course when you burn bridges you better have a backup plan. :)
