New to this forum hello everyone.

anyways I can't figure what to do with my beast she stumbles really bad when I try to take off, I have to slip the clutch a lot to make it take off and then it backfires a couple of times around 3500 it starts to feel right again. when it takes off at 4000 it will sometimes surge but then it will go again. but it feels like its not winding up near as fast as it should. and here's the kicker ladies and gentlemen there are no codes in the system, I repeat nocodes in the system does anyone out there have any ideas???

Definetly the first thing to check is the plugs, wires, and if there is any oil in the plug wells. This is the most common problem for the symptoms you are describing, especially if there are no codes.

I concur that it sounds like a secondary ignition fault and will go a little farther to say that you should stick with the proprietary Motorcraft plugs (AGSP32PP for $3.99ea from FordPartsNetwork.com) and the Motorcraft spark plug wires (WR-4033 for $83.99 from FordPartsNetwork.com). These wires also fit the 3.2L so we don't know why they charge $127.99 for the WRE-4081. There are very few engine control system faults other than the plug or wires that can create a misfire or stumble condition like you have described without setting an error code.

Which plugs did you install? Were you having the problem before the new plugs? Have yo uhad the intake manifold off? There could also be a ground connection problem to the DIS module on the intake's crossover tube. Check for good connections through the ground strap to the upper bolt of the passenger side, rear intake bracket and the two 12mm bolts that hold the crossover tube brackets to the front and rear intake plenums. Has the DIS module been removed from the intake?

Was there oil in the plug wells when you changed the plugs? If the wires were sitting in this there is a good chance that they need to be replaced. How many miles are on the wires? How did you check them?

I used the motorcraft plugs, I pulled the manifold off to do it (needed to be cleaned badly anyway) it was having this problem before I replaced them, I have also since replaced the timing belt, and the DIS module I will be pulling it all apart again to check for oil in the back wells again in a few days will let you know what I find Thanks

You can access the rear bank plugs without removing the intake manifold. Just remove the large vacuum hose above the number one cylinder and the vacuum accumulator above the number two cylinder. One hose clip and one 12mm bolt are much simpler than the entire intake manifold.

Thanx sdpatt for the tip in gaining access to the rear plugs, I took it apart at work no oil. but when I put it back together the problem had completely vanished. I was so excited, now to go find that pesky civic....

I had the same problem with the plug wires. If it happens again run a balance test then un-plug and reseat the plug wires to those cylinder/s.

See Shotimes for details on running a balance test.
