so finally im doing the rod bearings and i found the problem, its so obvious that i hope its not the worst, 1-when i grab the cap it has slight play, that was my noise 2-how do i split the cap off?the two nuts are off and my search here doesnt say if i should pry it or what, dont know what to use cause theres no space between it. all others are real tight but im doing them all, im guessing the bearing might be totaly missing, i see the copper in the drained oil and around the pan.now what??another motor?

I had the same problem. After spending about 2 hours busting my fingers up, i decided to get a long piece of soft metal (or rubber)... For me, i used a long screwdriver with a rubber handle on it. I put the rubber end on the bottom of the piston and gently tapped on it to force the piston upwards. This caused the cap to break away from everything else.

Hope that helps ya!

I used a hard piece of wood and a mallet and carefully tapped on the studs of the rods. Same thing SHO Phoenix Project says.

bottom part of bearing is fine the top seems to have been eaten away at the edges from bad friction!think of them side by side and the top half as half the sizeof the bottom one.i dont have a way to post pics but, hope ya get the idea.waiting on the new set of bearings to see what happens, i used a thin wooden hammer end to push the piston up a bit, thanks for the ideas.any ideas?

common rebuilds .... just use a rubber or soft plastic mallet and give it a whack. Bolted caps are easier than studded. Since all you have to do is pull the bolts out a bit and whack a bolt then it comes apart like nothing.

Inspect the crankshaft journal for damage.

If no damage, you will probably get by with a new bearing.
