Strange noise

Just bought a 93 SHO ATX. Replaced rod bearings first thing (they were toast). The valve lash was done not too long ago.


Car runs great at cold temps but as soon as it warms up there is a strange knocking noise coming from the motor near the distributor.
The car sounds like a diesel.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Also it is leaking oil from somewhere on the front side of the motor. Any idea where that could be coming from?

The oil leak could be a variety of things. Two of the more common ones are the cam and crank seal. Some people change them when they do the timing belt and others dont.

The knocking noise ... FYI the SHO does not have a distributor. Other than that tid bit of info, I cant help you. BUT there are others on this forum who will be able to help you.

If the knocking sound is coming from the driver's side, then the "distributor" is actually the coil pack. On occasion, I get a rapping, knocking sound at idle only and only when the engine is fully warmed up. For me, it's a bad cam chain tensioner and a stretched cam chain allowing the chain to rap against the cam cover.

They ya go. My first post and I already displayed my ignorance.

Anyway, I read on shotimes about someone that had a similar problem and as stated in one of the replies it was the cam tensioner and chain. Any idea on a good source for the tensioner?
