Storing A Fresh Rebuild

i am going to finish rebuilding this 3.0 i got for free but have a question or two. i dont plan on putting it in the car just yet. should i use Assembly **** and not put oil in the crankcase or should i use STP Oil Treatment in leiu of Assembly **** and fill the crankcase with oil ? also, would it be a good idea to rotate the crank once a week or so after its been stored ?

Hey,
My father and I just had our 1965 289 Mustang motor rebuilt. We got it back and it was in pieces. The machinist highly recommended that we reassemble the motor as soon as possible. However, in the meantime, he said that it was a good idea to spray WD-40 or another light oil over all the engine parts, the heads, the pistons, etc. I mean hit everything with a light coat every other day or so. I have been trying to do this whenever I think about it. Is your motor assembled? The guy said this was the safest bet to avoiding rust altogether. I know 289 is not the SHO motor (mine will be rebuilt soon actually), but I'm sure the same proceedure still applies. Hope this helps.

The 289 is a fine motor, definitely worth your effort... :thumb:

We already have the entire engine, just everything is dissassembled, so long block I suppose. It's interesting though, it's not the original motor. When my father was a teen and bought the 1965 GT used with the A code motor, the engine was at the end of it's life. He got a deal bought a remanufactured 289 block that had been bored out to 302, so I am hoping that we may be able to produce a real powerhouse here. And that's what we are looking for.

People are silly! Like saying one with what ever amount of boost is stupid for not having a intercooler when he has no boost but his own ego! :bonk:

I would not use wd-40 :nono: , I would put a squirt or 2 of oil in each cyl. and use assem. oil on the bearings. How long is the engine going to sit? Turn it over once a month. Need/want help installing?

itll sit til im ready to drop it in....like...i dunno....a few months after i get it done. ive moved to just outside of San Antonio so right now im just trying to get back on my feet. i appreciate the offer but i wont need the help, thanks anyway :thumb:

I would use assembly **** for the parts that are still accessable since it is so thick. It should last a little while. I would be more concerned about the cylinder walls and the cam shaft lobes sitting too long without some type of rust inhibitor on it. A squirt or two of oil sounds like not too bad of an idea and maybe rotating the assembly so the pistons will pull it down the cylinder walls. I have a short block in storage and your post reminded me to go and relube that area myself. :thumb:
I have the piston tops covered with copious amounts of duct tape to prevent debris from accumulating and to slow evaporation/oxidation a bit.

note, this is just my opinion and might not be the "right" answer.

When storing my snowmobile for the summer there is a product called "engine fog" which bascially coats the cylinder walls with oil and kept it lubed up thru the spring and summer (very moist times).

Following the same rationale, I would recommend you apply oil to the cylinder walls (like marvel mystery oil or some other type of oil that will "stick" to the components like the storage fog used for winterizing boats and summerizing jetskis) and a thick coat to the cam lobes and valve shims, chains etc. You want to keep something on those components that will stick and keep it from rusting. Ever see pitted cam lobes? yea thats from improper storage and oil that doesnt stick to the components.

The rod bearings should be ok as you said you used the rebuild grease which will keep them in good shape.

A "few" months like 4 or 5 shouldnt be a problem.

luigisho: actually, the block has been sitting outside for some time now. and the cylinder walls have not rusted yet. but in time, the cylinders will be deglazed to allow proper ring seating. im pretty sure either one of my options will suffice but i was just checking. once assembled, ill prolly coat the walls with STP, fill the crankcase with oil, and rotate the crank a few times, once a week. maximum store time looks to be about 3 months.
