I came to a Canadian tire recently to command new disks and as always ask some questions to know which car is (SHO or not).

He ask me the engine size which I always belived this was for distinguish SHO from SLO but the guy asked me this time if it was a SHO... I asked him why he ask this last question. The older employee affirmed that he worked many years at Ford dealer and saw some Taurus equipped with the Yamaha V8. He argued that Ford put the remainning V8 engines in SLOs getting rid of them (or sell them with a big rebate) probably in '99.

I was surprised by that. Someone already heard this story ?

It has come across a few times, but IIRC, questioning of Ford brought about denial. Spare SHO V8s remained crated, rather than being put in vehicles, and were then over the years turning up as crate engines for sale. Last one I remember hearing being resold, from someone that had it for many years and was selling it again, still in its crate, was maybe a decade ago now.

The 99 model year was not supposed to be, as 98 was going to be the last. I was looking to buy a new 98, then my buddy at Ford tipped me off that there would be a 99, since sales of 98s were so poor.

That's where the extra parts and engines went. They even decontented them more over the 98 Christmas shutdown. And they made dealers take 99 SHOs before they could get all of the F150s and Explorers they wanted.

The crate engine stock was quickly depleted from ShoBOOM, though, with warranties being bought out for pennies-on-the-dollar instead of engines replaced.
