It pretty much is. I honestly would of rather saved my money and used it for downpipes instead of upgrading the factory air box. Ford really did design this well and the air comes directly from the bottom portion of the fender.

What confused me was the open top design of the aftermarket CAI's. I assumed that it was getting air from below the edge of the hood but now that I've installed the Windstorm I find that isn't true. There is a factory seal near the edge of the hood that prevents air (and rain?) from entering between the hood and the grill. So the air intake comes through the grill into the rectangular plenum the same as the factory box. And the aftermarket CAI's with the seal around the top are using the car hood as the top of the filter box. But with the hood open you'll see a small rectangular shaped scope that also ties in with the plenum. I don't know what purpose that serves as it sits between both hood seals.

Air that goes to the air box actually comes from the grille area. It feeds some from under the hood gap, but most comes from the grille area. The '13+ cars have better air flow cause of the better design of the grill. I have added extra 3" tube the runs from fender side of the factory air box thru inner left front fender to the lower grille area. I just wanted some extra air.

RE: "some from under the hood gap". My 2015 has a seal 1 inch from the edge of the hood that prevents this from happening, this is in addition to the seal 9" from the edge that seals the engine compartment.
Did you remove the seal near the edge?

Just the slot that lets air into the air box...I removed about 1/2 inch from the bottom of the slot....Hard to say if it does anything, but it should allow more air into the air box.. I forgot to mention I'm using the Windstorm CAI .....Rich

I'm also using the Windstorm. I still wonder about the purpose of the slot in this pic.

My car has a seal at the hood edge along with a seal further back as shown below which totally isolates this slot opening. Did all years sho's have the forward seal at the hood edge? Has anyone cut this for airflow to the slot?

I noticed that on my 15 as well. I considered cutting, but it make me nervous to make irreversible changes. I think I'm going with the fender tube out of the factory airbox myself. I can plug the hole if the need arises with a hole plug.

I believe that is the factory inlet for the Flex, but not used on the SHO. MDesigns' product does use this inlet, and the newer Fusions/MKZs also have an inlet in that location. So the factory is plenty confident it can be used without risk.

Some insulating foam from Lowes helps the Airaid seal at the hood a lot better than the small weatherstripping that comes with the kit imo.
