Steering wheel removal

any tips on how to easily remove the steering wheel without taking the whole dash apart? i have it down the the point of removing the gauges but i just was hoping to get it out

Are you trying to remove the steering wheel or the steering column?

Neither requires doing anything to the dash...

steering wheel = remove airbag with rear screws. Remove big center nut and voila!

steering column i was hoping but i also have to remove the dash LATER on next spring so i just started dissambling some of it to get at the steering column i was going to paint the dash black in my mocha and wanted to get the steering column outta the black one. but i guess i could just paint the steering column or what shows of it. and just use the black steering wheel to. what would be easier? and is there chances of setting the airbag off? i know how they can go off with just the slightest bit of charge. just trying to be careful as i also dont feel like geting it put back lol. it seems as if it is much easier to just remove the steering wheel. i just wanna make sure the airbag doesnt go off

No chance of doing that , as soon as you have the bag removed , unplug & put away.

Air bag blows with a 12v + & 12v- shot. Both wires got nothing in them , Its the computer that sends the 12V + signal , to deploy when collision.

I'd make sure the battery as been disconnected for a while (maybe an hour or so) before, just to be sure that there's no more power in the circuit.

dont have to wait an hour take the battery off and push the brake pedal or open a door or something and power left the car.
the gen1 i believe the airbag stuff holds a charge for 20 mins while the gen 2 up is a few secs. something like that

yeah... well i COMPLETELY forgot about a steering wheel puller lol i knew i needed one... just forgot lol so i painted it all instead... lol turned out amazingly!!! lol ill post pics of my interior swap as soon as the seats and carpet get back in the car

on an 89, once the horn pad is off, do i need a steering wheel puller or not? i've got a manual here that says for 89s, one is NOT needed.... can anyone with experience with 89s confirm this? thanks!

As a locksmith I pull steering wheels all the time mainly chevs though, and I havent found a single car yet that doesnt need a puller.
