I've been following recent postings by members with apparant steering rack problems that sound very similar to what's going on with my 94 ATX. Feel a pulsing, pull back in the wheel, mainly on long curves(freeway on ramps)etc.Mechanic advised me to change the rack to a Gen 1 non variable assist type. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?

Also planning to install a Super Chip and have heard tales of resulting trans problems. Would having a transmission performance uprade kit installed at the same time help to ward off problems?

Your symptoms sound very much like the ones that caused me to replace my steering rack. I am enjoying the linear steering response again without the kickback. I just looked in my Cilton's manual to see what the hookup differences are between the VAPS and non-VAPS racks. As long as they still have the same mounting bolt spacing they still have the same in and out hydraulic lines. The non-VAPS racks are certainly cheaper ($79 reman).

Scott: Thanks for the reply. Saw your earlier message about starter problem. Replaced mine about 2 years ago. Had about 2 days warning before it quit-cranked hard a few times and then caught on 2 or 3 occasions-then just went belly up.
