My STeering feels as if there is a notch on center. Hangs up coming just off center then all is fine. Just started today. '94 with 127k. Could it be the rack or rods shrug

My car does the same thing. The tie-rods have been replaced, along with the ball joints. I think it is the rack. Mine goes away once it warms up, does yours? I think there may be a valve in the rack that is sticking, but I haven't taken it apart yet to find out.heath94:

Mine only does it right on-center. I can feel it particularly on certain curves, where I have to move the wheel just a bit further than, say, a lane change, and its like a valve pops open and gives more boost to the Power Steering, and the wheel jumps over from the force I am applying.HydroStream6:
Does it do it all the time or only when making a sharp or aggressive turn? If it's the latter then it could very well be your subframe bushings.
However, that is a completely different issue than "notchy" steering.the pulsing in the long turns has been reduced considerably.
It can also be due to contamination of the spool valve and seals on a new rack. Mine still does it, but I was not aware if the importance than Cardone places on a totally clean PS system when a rack is replaced. I'll try to backflush the rack and install new hoses one of these days. The change in power assist when holding the wheel in long turns is due to worn seals in the rack as rangerj said.
