95 ATX 84K, About a month ago I had discovered a small coolant leak from the waterpump. I continued to drive with the leaking pump. This morning when I was driving to work I turned the defrost on and steam just poured out. It filled the entire cabin, stunk of coolant, and fogged my windows up horribly. I turned the temp to 60 and the steam stopped. I stopped the car and had to wipe down the windows with a paper towel. I noticed that even with the defrost blasting at 60, there is still a small amount of steam lightly rolling out of the vent; as if it was not in the stream of cold air already flowing out of the vent. I also noticed that the steam only smelled like coolant when it first came out, there after it was odorless. Any suggestions? Maybe an alternative problem that doesn't involve ripping out the dash.

hail I pray to the hail SHO gods hail thout not be thy heater core headbang .

half-way there, I think.
Sorry, but sure sounds like a heater core to me. There is no other source for steam to come out of the vents then it.

Seriously, YES your heater core is shot, or getting there in a hurry to say the least.

Welcome to the club. Mines on it's last leg and I'm trying to make it last through the winter.

I guess I am pretty much screwed, is there anyway to bypass the heater core? I think I should take the $1000 its gonna cost to have it repaired and put a down payment on a new car. The SHO gods have punished me severely. What have I done? Did I not wash you enough? Damn you dirty apes.

Yep, look at the firewall, you will see 2 hoses that go through it. Disconnect the 2 and splice them together.

Kelly,

Put down the beer and back away from the keyboard. I realize it 5 o'clock somewhere, but you're still starting a little early.

How about this for a prize:

TWR gets to discharge the A/C system, pull the dash, and replace the heater core in aaronsbiza's SHO!! evil_gri

Sounds like a good prize to me....

Runner up receives a Hand Grenade, which he/she than pulls the pin and places the grenade in the engine compartment.

Would bypassing the heater core have any effects on the rest of the system?

Actually, the past week or so I have gone to work and had to scrape ice off my windshield. Sacramento gets pretty cold, if you can classify 40 degrees as cold. I have no sense of what is cold or hot, I moved from Maine to San Diego to Sacramento, my internal thermometer is all messed up.

And it's not a crack pipe.... It's a Bong pcorn
