While I wasnt driving the 98, my mom called and said her car got stuck in first gear at a light. She said the car would barely move and sounded horrible. She pulled over and put it in 2 and R and then back to D and went on driving. It's been fine ever since.

Sounds to me like the car got stuck in a higher gear like 3rd, kinda like when you start a MTX in a higher gear and it will barely move.

Is this the sign of upcoming problems or just a fluke? The tranny filter and fluid were changed at 33k. Fluids full I checked it the day before.

Just a stab in the dark, but, possibly the torque converter locking up?

I'm no expert but I do manage a transmission shop in Cincinnati. The first step in my opinion would be to scan the vehicle. Even if the sevrice engine light is not on, it may have set a code. I am told that Autozone does this for free, but the scanner they use only gives trouble codes, no data display. But it would be a good place to start. Good luck, and if you are close and need a scan, I would be glad to help.

Unfortunatly I'm not close other wise I'd take you up on that offer. Your right I forgot the tranny will throw codes on these newer cars. Thanks! To bad I'm not in HS anymore so I can use the scanner in auto shop. That's like the one thing I'm gonna miss about HS...
