Hey all... Starter just went out on me and I was wondering about how much a new or rebuilt starter for my 93 ATX would run.. I am planning on having someone do it so I was also wondering maybe how long of a job it would be for a skilled mechanic and/or could I possibly switch one out myself (i.e. what tools, time, etc.)? I just don't want to get price gouged since I live in San Francisco, SHO work isn't cheap... BTW, if anyone knows of a good shop that works on SHOs or does good work for cheap in SF or the bay area please let me know.. Thanks!!

My suggestion is that you should try to do it yourself. It is not hard at all. I think that there are 3 bolts and the wires. I don't even think you could mix up the wires. (I could, but you couldn't) I can't remember what a new starter should cost, but I've heard that getting a rebuild kit is the way to go. If you figure that you can't do it, you might be able to get one of the BAY SHO guys to help you. www.baysho.org You may end up owing someone beer for having to do extra driving in bay area traffic, but you'll learn how to do it, and you won't give your money to a shop. (but if you do give your money to a shop, give it to Nick Chrimes, if he does small jobs like this)
Good luck,
Also, if you don't kow the people in your neighborhood, check this out http://www.shoforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=30;t=000114

If I were you, I would do it myself. It takes a little effort taking off the two bolts from the starter and you are good to go. Make sure that you unhook all the wires that connects to the starter and put them back the way it was before on the new one. There is only one way that you can bolt on the starter, so it is really fool proof.

I replaced my starter 11 months ago from my 95 ATX. I bought the remanufactured starter from Ford. I did not even bother checking the solenoid attached to the starter...I just went ahead and replaced the whole thing. It cost me $140.00 dollars. However, you probably can get a lower priced remanufactured starter from NAPA or Autozone. Shop around.

Good Luck.
