For some reason the grounding stud on my '93 MTX starter is missing the nut that holds the ground cable onto the stud. I was told by the Ford dealer that it should be a standard 10mm nut, and I should just go to the hardware store and buy one. Well, I did that, but apparently there must be different pitch 10mm nuts available, because the one I bought only threads about 3/4 turn, then stops. Home Depot only had the one pitch, so I'm going to have to look elsewhere. Does anybody know the specifics of this part? headbang

If it's a lock nut and your hand tightening it, that's why.

There are several metric thread pitches available. Your best bet is to take the stud to a hardware store (not Lowes or HD) such as Ace, True Value, or Sears and match it up. If you go to a REAL auto parts store, they will have a set of thread guages with which to measure it.

Thanks. I would like to take the stud to get somebody to look at it, but it's still attached to the car. doh Shouldn't the parts guy be able to order something like this? Assuming, of course, that I find anybody that really knows or cares.

Ace hardware has always had what I was looking for. If you run out of luck, I'm sure I have a couple lying around here!

Thanks very much! I'll try ACE here in town on Friday. If I cannot find anything in a couple of weeks, I might just take you up on that offer! :D

It's very easy to remove the starter should you decide to take it with you. Just be sure to disconnect the battery first.

I've found hard-to-find nuts and bolts at Checker Auto Parts. They have them in small packages in the aisles.

Good luck.

That's a good idea, too. There are several parts places here; NAPA, O'Reilly, Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc. Surely between all of them and the hardware stores I'll be able to come up with something that'll work.

Thanks to everyone for all your help! hail

This is more than likely a 1.25 or 1.5 pitch. Do yourself a favor and put a washer on top of the lug before tightening it down. It will make removal the next time a lot simpler.
