Starter installation

My starter took a **** on me today. I had to hit it with a wrench to make the engine roll over. So now I need a new starter. Can anyone walk me though it? I didn't see a writeup at shotimes. Thanks

It's not a bad job.
Drive the car up on ramps.
Disconnect the battery.
Remove the three mounting bolts (or is it two - can't remember).
Starter drops out.
Remove big wire that comes from battery.
Remove small wires to solenoid.

Reverse for installation.
Shazzaam you're done!

FYI, it's apparently a little more difficult on a Gen 1. When we did a '92, it was not hard at all - my 91 is a whole different animal.

Well, I attempted to change the starter today, and I couldn't get the 2 damn bolts off. I couldn't even budge them an inch. does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking a lot of liquid wrench. I really don't want to strip the bolts at all. Thanks.

Use a cheater bar.

Soak the bolts with PB Blaster, it's the best stuff in the world for getting bolts loose. You can use a breaker bar on them if you can get enuf room under there to use it. Just make sure that you have a good bite on the bolt before you do it otherwise you may strip the bolt head off.

Other than that it's a fairly easy job to do.

Both gens bolt up the same, it'll have a 15mm nut on the upper starter stud (tranny side) holding the wiring harness clip. Once you remove the nut and clip, you can take both 13mm studs off. The gen1 cars have a 10mm bolt that holds a bracket to the block, and also have the hot feed coming from the solenoid on the fender, 10mm I think. The gen2 cars have the solenoid on the starter itself, and the connections are easier to get off/on. Also the gen2 starter is smaller and easier to wiggle out.

Well guys, I gave up. I soaked the bolts in PB Blaster like you said, and still nothing. I pushed so hard that I ended up stripping the bolt. I still couldn't budge those bolts. So I gave up, pushed started the SHO(quite ugly) and took it to my mechanic. I will be sucking down a $55 bill tomorrow too. Thanks for all your help, and sorry I couldn't come out the victor.

When I changed my starter I could not get the one bolt on the tranny side off, which is more to the front of the starter. I just couldn't get enough torque on it in such a small place. I ended up getting a long half inch drive ratchet and running extensions all the way out the driver's side fender well. After I did this it came loose in one turn.
