Starter Drive

Anyone know what a starter drive sounds like when its done? Every time I fire it up, as the engine starts to spin the starter is makes a very strange sound. Almost sounds like a very dry start. I guess it could also be the bushing on the rear of the commutator shaft.
Any Ideas?

When the starter drive fails you will hear the starter spin but the gear does not engage the flywheel/flexplate.

I thought that the solenoid was actually pushing the gear out.

The relay energizes the solenoid and the windings of the starter which spins the starter and pulls the starter drive lever in forcing the pinion gear on the end of the starter drive out to engage the flywheel/flex plate teeth.

Its sounds like it could be not returning to the rest position after starting. The solenoid is only 1 month old. I shall pull it apart perhaps and take a look. Never know it may be a bad ring or sun gear in there too.

The solenoid has a return spring that could be broken, or the piston could be sticking and not allowing the "bendix" gear to disengage. I have also seen the "yoke" that moves the drive gear (bendix) break and cause problems.

Pull the starter and take it apart for a close inspection of the parts. rangerj

Well I pulled it all apart last night after getting a new drive, bushings, brushes and another solenoid to replace the 2 month old one on there. I found the bushings to be worn quite a lot probably what the noise was caused by. But I wanted to do a total rebuild anyway. All went well except I couldn't get the 12 tooth drive to engage the flywheel. So I tossed a 10 tooth on there this afternoon and it works great. The first few starts had a funny tach for some reason when the starter was running. I figure it may have been electrical interference until the brushes set themselves. All is well now and I have a almost new starter.

...geez ! if u don't mind my asking ? why would you go thru all that trouble and uncertainty ? instead of just buying a new starter with a lifetime warrenty or something similar .....lolol

And rangerj is right I would rather fix it myself than have some person who hates there job and is half asleep at some factory. This way I know what has been done to it and I shouldn't have to take it back every 2 months for exchange. Also the biggest factor the almost $200 I saved. Starters were not cheap in my area. Here in Canada we have only about 1/5th of the part stores you guys have in the US.
