some of you may remember my problem from earlier this year. It goes like this: sho runs perfect, and then stalls without any warning. sometimes it will restart in one minute, sometimes one hour. It then runs perfect again. there does not seem to be any pattern to this problem.

Fuel system checks out good.

starter cranks, and tach registers, but no start.

I replaced the ignition module -- no luck.

Somebody has suggested replacing the "accessory relay" a.k.a. "multifunction module". This is supposedly somwhere near the radiator cover. One person remembers a recall of this part.

Does this sound like a good idea to anybody else?

thanks for your time

No, it does not sound like a good idea. If all you were to do was to change modules, you could work at a Ford dealership.....

It takes thre things to make any engine run: Spark, Fuel, and Air, each in the proper amount and at the proper time.

Spark: Use a timing light connected to the #1 or #5 cylinder. Verify that timing is at 10 BTDC with SPOUT jumper removed.

Fuel: Verify you have 39 psi at the fuel rail. Use a gauge. Don't guess. Testing of injector firing is more complicated.

Air: No vacuum leaks, airbox and air tube connected, throttle body plate moves normally....

Forum history says it's probably the cam sensor or the crank sensor. Personally, I'd start carrying around a timing light so I could check the ignition system the next time it fails.

I like your thinking, because each module is expensive.

The car, however, runs perfect between each time it stalls. When it does stall, there is no warning. It sure seems to be some kind of electrical shutdown.

Timing and fuel have already been tested.

Thanks

Then that leaves spark as the most likely culprit.

Throw the timing light in the truck so you're ready for the next time.

sunny San Juan Bautista,
I'm having basically the same problem. When the car is started after it's quite hot then it trys to stall and backfires a bit like it's dropping a bunch of cylinders. I've got a new CID sensor to put in and I figure I'll clean up all the ground connections that I can find in that area while I'm at it.

thanks for your comment.

there is a difference between your troubles and mine.

my sho runs absoulutely flawless until the exact moment it shuts down. No warning; no backfire; no weird sounds; no engine miss; no decrease in power, speed, or rpm; no nothing. it just plain shuts down -- check engine light on, accessories on.

Make sure your terminals on the bateries are tight and if they are tight then your fuel pump is in the process of dying on you.Replace it, i had same problem

When it stalls, look for the tach needle to drop out with the clutch engaged rolling along, if this occurs, R&R the CPS. Its more common for the ignition to cut out after the it has ran up to normal temp., been shut down, and ran again, if it restarts. eventually it will quit for good.

The car has a new fuel pump, and the system pressure has been tested. Everything seems good

tach does drop when it stalls, but it still registers @ 300 rpm when cranking = not cps

anyone else -- please.
