Spring Question - Shorten with a Type of Spring Compressor?

I'm not sure the heading helps, but at Pep-Boys, I saw a thingamig that clamps onto a spring, say a few coils in length, and you can tighten down on it to shorten the spring.

Would it replace cutting coils? Is this any good? Can it last?

I have a feeling it's no good...
