What started as what seemed to be a fairly simple coil-pack failure has me stymied ! Engine started running roughly and obviously running on less than 6cylinders. Code originally received indicated that coil # 3 was inoperative. I replaced coil-pack with a new unit and car immediately fired up on 6 cylinders and ran perfectly (for 2 days !). When the same cylinder-loss reappeared, I nursed the SHO back home and again tried to pull codes. This time the ECU indicated that it was a 4 cylinder engine with no failure codes ! Further, after firing the engine two or three times (on 4 cy) it cranked but refused to fire at all, with no fire to plugs. I tried another coil-pack with no change, and cleaned up connectors at coil-pack and DIS, also with no change. I also tried several DIS modules and ECU's, then ran the Probst and Rangerj voltage tests and found diminished voltage on PIP signal (0.6 V) and 0 volts
on Spout wire, suggesting a CPS failure. Ironically, the CPS is a new unit installed when I did the front-end 60K about two months ago. Hoping that I could find some other fault, and not have to disassemble the whole front end again, I started chasing wires and found no vbat power at DIS, AND no vbat power at the Integrated Relay Control Module (IRCM). I did find 12V at engine compartment fuse block, and coil and IRCM-power fuses were both good. I found circuit-16 12V on both sides of 4-wire connector beneath the big square multi-wire connector on driver side inner fender-wall, but could not access harness to chase it any farther. Also, sometime during this whole process, a minor short-to-ground (somewhere) developed and drained the battery. I don't remember this being the case when I first got the car back home, and it may be attributable to something I've done.

I'm toying with the idea of running a jumper directly from the fuse-block to the IRCM to see if 12V throughout the system will be restored. Good idea or bad ? Is there any other feed in that circuit that I would be bypassing that would cause problems ?

All input and suggestions greatly appreciated !

Thanks,

Dinosauro

You can go ahead and run a 12ga wire from the fuse block to the IRCM, but I would make damn sure to put a fuse in there. I can't even begin to guess what size fuse you'd need, but you def. don't want to leave it unprotected.

It does sound like you have a wiring fault somewhere.
