Hey,
A few weeks ago my speedometer and odometer quit on me. I took it into a shop, but I was told that the problem wasn't the speedometer, or the speed sensor, but the cable in between. The bad news, was that it was impossible to access and I'd need to take it to a dealer to either drop the engine out of the car or take it half apart. I just wanted to check whether anyone else has had this problem and whether the mechanic was correct that this drastic measure is my only option. Thanks a lot!

The speedo cable is not that difficult to replace. If you have an MTX (I'm not familiar with the ATX setup, it may be similar) it is a two piece cable . You have to remove the instrument panel to detach it at the speedo. The detachment for the cable->cable connection is under the hood near the master cylinder. The final detachment is at the transmission. All can be done with the motor in the car

It is an ATX, but I doubt that would change much. Thank you very much.

It`s a PITA,but you don`tr have to remove the cluster.Lay on your back on the floor, and reach way up following the cable. You have to squeeze it to allow it to pull out.Look where the 2 cables connect to each other near the drivers side firewall under the hood.Disconnect that to see which cable is broken.

I don't believe so. It had been behaving pretty normally. When it broke I had just accelerated onto the on ramp and I saw the needle just fall. I doubt this is connected, but about a week before it failed I was rear-ended. I appreciate the help!
