Problem here. My speedo will jump 5-25mph when driving and it also shakes the needle. It started bad yesterday I was driving on the highway going about 80-85mph the all of a sudden my speedo jumps up to 120. When my speedo does jump it stays, and it dosen't correct it self. Only when i stop. Anything up to 15mph it is fine. But when my speedo jumps i hear this like whosing/wind/spinning noise hard to describe it. I need help with it , what the **** is wrong with it? I haven't checked yet but do you think it messes with my odomater then also. I don't think this has anything to do with it but my odomater was rolled back once.

Sounds like a speedo cable to me, I have heard of that kind of thing happening to cars with higher miles (assuming you have that due to the odometer roll-back) My friend's Mustang did the same thing and it turned out to be the speedo cable. To the best of my knowledge the speedo cable is not affected by the odometer at all. But thats just what I think I am no expert

Is the noise you heard kind of like a scratching/scraping noise? If so, then it probably is the speedo cable. They are known to be problematic on these cars. My dad's old truck had the same problem, and it made a weird scratching noise when the needle was acting up. The only thing it didn't do was stay consistant in one spot; it would bounce around.

Funny thing about those problematic speedometer cables - Ford specifies a lubricant for this cable. This means we could make them last longer by properly maintaining them. Only catch is, the effort to lubricate it is the same as to replace it and the replacements are quite cheap. You can replace the core for about $7.

The scratching noise and the wavering needle are definite indicators of a worn out cable. The sticking needle may indicate that the needle's bearings could be lubricated with a light machine oil (3-in-1).
