That's weird that the speedo and gas gauge would stop working at the same time; the speedo is driven mechanically by the speedo cable going to the tranny and the gas gauge is driven electrically by a single wire coming from the sender unit. The two share nothing in common, except that they're in the general vicinity of each other.

Try turning your cruise control on. If the car acts 'weird', then it's probably your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) in the tranny itself; it's a little plastic gear. When that wears down or breaks, all sorts of problems happen, including the speedo not working. The speedo cable itself might have broken. If that's the case, you had better hope it was the upper cable, since nobody makes lowers. It could (and, based on the symptoms, might be) the cluster itself. I don't know of any connection between the speedo and gas gauge. I know it's a pain in the @$$ to switch clusters (trust me, it is) but that's the only real solution I can think of. I really hope somebody has a better idea, though...

--edit-- ok, didn't see your second post. Knowing that, it's most likely either the VSS or the speedo cable. Neither are fun or easy to replace. Clusters very rarely break...

yeah, fuel gauge is probabaly a sending unit or something electrical, where as the speedo... eeesh you might have a bigger problem on your hands with that first id make sure the connection to the tranny is good (the cable is snugly in the tranny)

where the cable connects to the tranny is almost directly behind the throttle body, its pretty hard to miss, it also has a plastic connector on it, which is the backup lights

i dont see how it would come out, but if somone had it out and forgot to put the metal clip back in it might be able to slide out... atleast its a place to start...

The Clusters are easy! 30 minutes tops. Why do you think they are difficult?

Pull the metal panel underneath the steering column off with 4 screws, remove the 4 screws for the platic cluster surround, pull it off, take the ountign screws out that hold the cluster in, pull it slightly out, unplug the connections and speedo cable , reverse to install. Unless you have ungodly big hands, its a piece of cake. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being alomst impossible, I'd rate this a 3.

The '89 Cluster is a PITA. :madflame:

That's not a lie compared to 90-95. You have to remove a crap load more on the 89 and, IIRC, you have to remove the ignition cylinder to remove the steering column covers so you can get the dash trim piece off or the cluster [one of the two].

The Gen2's are simple, 9 bolts/screws/nuts and your ready to unbolt the cluster.

I am assuming they are two seperate problems. I woudl bet yor sender is bad in your tank, that is very common.

If it's not the fuel lever sender, I wouldn't doubt it's the actual fuel gauge part in the cluster. In the 89's, they all bolt up to the back and I've had an erratic tachometer and a bad coolant guage that was fixed with the replacement of used ones from another cluster.
