Just picked up a 94 ATX and I noticed the speed odometer doesn't work. Every other gauge works but the speed odometer. Anyone have any ideas as to where I should start. I'm assuming it needs to be replaced, I can't see how the cable could have come loose in the back but I suppose it's possible.

I am having the same problem with my speedodometer but it works sometimes but is probably never tellling me the correct speed! I guess I will start with the wires behind! I am not sure what to tell ya about it not working at all! Everything else workks at all times! But if anyone has other ideas of what it could be or how to fix it, please respond and let us know! Thanks!

I don't think it has any electrical connectors that effect the speedodometer, there is a cable that connects to it in the back. I haven't looked into this issue yet but I will tomorrow. I'm assuming the speedodometer is the culprit and needs be replaced.

There is two parts to the cable!

One from the back of the cluster truw the fire wall and out then it goes it to another part of the cable.
(This connector that connects both cables might be triped or not connected at all)
This was an issue with my 89,91.92 SHO's that I've had.

If all that is good the problem might be furthur down towards the tranny! (Follow the cable)

The connector that goes to the tranny goes bad to. I just hade to re-place mine not too long ago.

No not yet but I am going to check tomorrow. Where does it connect to on the tranny?

Its behind the engine right under the throttle body, you will have to disconect the throttle cabled so that you will have easy acces to the conectors. You will also need to remove the plastic tube that connects the throttle body to the filter (of course) if you locate the cable coming from the fire wall just follow it. On the bottom of the cable "IF" everything is connected its most likely that the speed sensor is bad.
That is were those two cables from the Speedo meet @ the tranny. Its most likey that that connector is bad then the cable had somehow disconected it self from the back of the dash.

Let me know how it goes.

Good luck!!

Hit 110-115 in my 92 one morning and the needle just dropped and started bouncing. came back up when I let off but didnt come to the correct speed until I left the gas station.

Also it could be as simple as the magnets in the speedometer.

If you take the gauge cover off, and undo the screws on the speedometer/odometer/trip assembly you can usually finangle it out enough to expose the cable/ring. You can turn the ring by hand and the needle should move a bit. That can help you identify if it is the cable or speedo, or the tranny side.

You can do the same from the connector from the outside and you dont need to remove anything!

holy shit its not that hard people... just LOOK and see if a. the first cable is attached to the transmission. b. the second cable is attached to the first one and c. if they are connected you THEN pull the dach cover off and stick your hand around and see if its attached to the cluster. very simple.
