I had a 93 ATX that i had a Pro -m 80 on and it worked fine. I sold that car and bought a 94 MTX thinking that i would switch over the perf parts that i had on the old SHO. Of cource the fit was fine, but i noticed my gas milage has suffered and there is a buildup of light soot(no smoke) inside the tail pipe. I am wondering what measures i should take to fix this and will it hurt the motor any if i left it alone. I wanna fix it if possible myself. Thanks

Does your water temp raise pretty high before the fan cuts on? A bad ECT will cause a rich mixture.

Are you thinking that it might be caused by the MAF?? You could try and clean the electronics of the new MAF, or reset the computer to see if that fixes the problem.

Can you give any other information??

Slo-Sho:
Your old 93 used the H3Z, the MTX uses the X2J.
I think his problem started after the upgrades. The computer should still be looking for the same signal from the MAF.... Dunno, we will have to wait for his follow up.

While that may be true, both computers are still looking for the stock 55mm MAF signal. If the Pro-M is already calibrated for one it "should" be good for the other.

it happened when i switched from one caqr to the other. Also, i had a shop put the shoshop y-pipe on. I do not know if the cats are able to go on one way or the other. is it poss to put them on backwards? I doubt this is the prob because there is no power loss. just the milage and soot in the pipe.

The way to check your A/F ratio is by putting it on a dyno or they can tell you when you do your smog test.

The MAF may need to be taken apart to clean. I do not know what people are using to clean it, I have yet to have the need to clean mine. You also may want to reset your computer as well. If everything is good but you still want to adjust your A/F ratio, you will need and LPM or SCtuner and some dyno-tuning time. That is the BEST way to tune you A/F mixture.

The MAF filament can and should be cleaned only by some electronic cleaner that you can purchase from Radio Shack for about $9 a bottle. It has a soft brush and some non-electrocharged, and non-caustic cleaner that works great for cleaning MAF filaments...

Ok, its due for a smog test soon anyway. will they (SMOG People) be able to tune the maf or with the a/f ratio that they give me, can i order an LPM to adjust it? does any of this hurt the car in the mean time? i am kinda concerned.

The "SMOG people" will most likely NOT be able to adjust the A/F.... Most of the places I have been to the employees were idiots, I did not like them even sitting in my car.

Yes, an LPM can fix your problem, but with the tune by mail it gets difficult. If you want to dyno tune it, you could completely fix your rich condition and gain some power.

running rich won't really hurt the motor. Before you go the LPM route and tuning... try to clean the MAF and reset the computer. Make sure all sensors are good too. You may want to put in new 02 sensors.

Every car I've ever had has a sooty tail pipe. This is the effect of using the gas pedal to it's maximum travel. I recently had the '97 on the dyno and it held a smooth and even 12.75 A/F ratio above 4000 rpm. Under that when the gas was first mashed it was in the 15 range hence the soot.

Engine Coolant Temperature sensor... It is located just to the right of the T-stat. It is quite a bitch to get to with the intake on, but it can be done.

When this goes bad, it causes the car to run rich. It will heat up quite fast when stopped and the fan will not kick on til really late... almost to the point of over heating.

Where in New York are you located?? I am in Rome right now...

I'm in Albany, thanks for clearing that up. It doesn't heat up into the red area but it does rise quite a bit. I've driven an ATX before I bought my MTX and the temperature never moved, that's why I was suprised mine went up so high, I'll look into this. Thanks a lot!
