I've driven it about 400 mi now post cam weld.

There are a few things I've noticed that I'm not sure if they're signs of a problem or just a characteristic of the car.

1 - on start up there is a whistling sound. Usually lasts 30 sec or so. Could be a simple as a fan or something like that, but it's a whistle which makes me think possible vacuum leak. It starts and idles fine (uhh, there was ONE time it didn't want to start/idle).

2 - the rear end sounds like I have an offroad tire (or two) on it. There's a pronounced hum. Ride and everything is fine, but - huuuuummmmm.
Wheel bearing maybe? Or just the way it rolls?

3 - Shifts hard from 1-2 some, maybe as much as half the time. ESPECIALLY when it downshifts at low speed/******* the throttle. It's just short of a clunk. In general it seems to shift pretty smoothly and the trans behaves basically like I'd expect it to, but if I nail it doing 10-15...thud!

1) It could be the Secondary Air Injection pump. It runs for about 30 seconds or a little longer at startup. It injects air into the exhaust to get the cats up to temp faster on a cold startup.

2) The sound could definitely be a wheel bearing. To rule out a tire that might have a bad belt you could rotate them and see if the noise stays in the same spot. It's a little labor intensive but it is free. :)

3) I've heard others say that behaviour could be a sign of a worn transmission. I don't have personal experience with this one so hopefully others will chime in.

Could be some worn parts int he transmission or it could be movement under the hood like failed motor/tranny mount

The whistling sound at startup is the extra air going through the IAC.

The wheel bearing is easy to change on the rear. Jack up the wheel and see if you can wiggle it , any movement is bad.

Check you tranny mount on the drivers side to see if it is broken.

Thanks for the ideas.

I'm definitely going to do some checking into the rear wheel bearings.

I'll see what I can figure out with the trans, too.

I've really enjoyed driving it so far. Hoping to stay out of the wallet for a while other than a few cosmetic things.

23mpg first tank. Not exactly babying it. I think it will do a bit better most of the time. It will be 80% hwy.
