...but I have to ask.

I've got 107,000 on my SHO, and the previous owner changed the oil religiously at 3,000 at the quick **** with Quaker State. I'm more of a Valvoline fan from my Mustangs, and are looking for a better oil for the SHO. Questions are:

1. Can I put full synthetic into it, or will it blow past the rings and smoke?

2. Any advantage to using the "high mileage" oils with wear additives?

3. Can anyone respond without flaming two particular brands of oil? J/K :D

Thanx

Could you, would you, please try the search function on this very well discussed and very well contended question?

I use Valvoline Synthetic 5W-30 with no problems. Lots of people like Mobil1.

However - there's another post on startup noise that indicates synthetic oils as a cause of this - I guess due to cold oil's low viscosity?

Some synthetics are better than others, and you have to watch the VM (viscosity modifier) content with more than a 25 point difference (ie 20w-50 and 10w-40 aren't really good for this engine).

Someone had some really good info on oils - try a search using "proper engine oil" for keywords.

I did, but a lot of the info is just flames of Pennzoil and QS. I got the info about using the FL1A's, I'm just looking for specific information on the additive oils and whether I can put full synthetic oil into my engine at 106,000 or if I'd even be OK with semi-synthetic...

I'll look some more, but a lot of the discussions are more toward which oil is better than others...

You should have no problems using synthetic. The only reason I don't is because I just burn/leak too much oil as it is to be cost efficient.

What does your oil consumption look like now?

I also use the FL-1A size filter, but next time I may try something even longer (Wix 51773), and if it fits I'll probably use that from now on.

Hey guys, I just found (with shobikes' help) the right post for me.

Once again, from Scott. Castrol GTX High Mileage, and an FL1A or Supertech equivalent coming tonight. I believe it was decided in an earlier post.

I will also submit oil for sampling at work.

My current consumption isn't really clear yet, haven't had the car long enough yet (1 week) but it doesn't smoke, and other than the plug wells which will be fixed this weekend, no leaks, either.

Thanks guys.

ive used valvoline durablend 5w-30 in my SHO for all of its life. and it is very good and clean oil. when i had the cam covers off my heads, they looked pretty clean for having 98k on it. one oil recommended for the SHO's is Mobile 1. but im very happy with the oil i use.

Don't waste your money on the high milage stuff if you don't need it. Regular GTX works very well for the $$.

I would use regular oil and change it every 3k. Personally. The oil in my car comes out nearly as clean as it goes it, and I've got 108k miles. Car has always had the oil changed every 3k, but it was probably a different brand each time until I got it. I used valvoline 10w30 once, then switched to Castrol 10w30 (improved idle oil pressure hot) and I now have 5w30 for the winter. Lost 1-2 psi at idle when its really warm out, but still nothing to worry about.

I recommend Castrol GTX. Cheap and effective.

Here's a couple pics of my valvetrain at 103k:
