If I redo my catback at some point I am seriously considering going with single exhaust. What size exhaust piping are people using for the single? Are they upsizing at all?

I have all the pieces together, excpet for a couple of piping bends, to build a 2.75 inch mid section exhaust system.. Can point you to a high flow flex pipe of this diameter.

As to the single muffler, it should be one of high flow type.

zach is cammed among other things..

Like I said, for a stock or bolt on sho (intake, bbbs, udps. Stuff of that nature) 2.5" is pleanty.

Even for zach I still feel 3" is too large. 3"+ are really only going to help if your boosted or reving it to the moon... again. Opinion...

I was thinking 2.75". Flex Pipe? Flex pipes are used in ATX applications, correct? Mine is an MTX.

Zach's car and mine are very similar, as far as mods go. Mine is a full bolt-on 3.2 with TrFlows. I don't mind trading a little low end torque for extra power above 4K. I am still thinking 3" would be a little too big. Probably would go with a 2.75" single exhaust with a high flow muffler.

Hmmm, I am currently running a Dynomax catback.....I wonder if opening it up a little would net me some more HP?......:naughty: Or I could just install a cut out for when I go to the track.....man that would sound terrible though!

The tip is just to big. I like the idea but not that muffler.

Agreed......and motorized butterfly is mega-rice

I'd recommend srt8 charger mufflers, but they're massive under the back of the car.....and I haven't had time to put them on my 95 yet either....

I looked at doing a ball and socket in 2.75, and the closest any OEM has done is 2 5/8 (e.g. you can get the graphite seals from NAPA or AP, also the keeper ******).

I think its critical to manage the two 2" or larger post cat pipes coming together and not trying to stuff that into a 2.5 inch pipe, its too large of an area reduction. If you cut the pipe sticking out of the cheap maganflow Y pipe back to the exit ****** you get a 2.5 inch ID (larger than the 2.38 ID of a 2.5 inch nominal pipe) - I plan to cut back a little farther so that the pipes cleanly merge into 2.75 (OD)

For the flex pipe or pipes, make sure the ID has a smooth bore ("tri layer"). The bilayer ones with corrugations on the ID hamper flow, as do the cheap ones that are just woven on the ID - the boundary layers are killer on those. OEM flex pipes for everything after the mid 90s have a smooth ID

A flex pipe will function mechanically the same as the ball and socket in terms of engine movement, flex being a little better.

Just wanted to add, my catback is factory stock, with an older Performance Plus y-pipe. I added a flex pipe in two years ago, to do away with the horrible donut design. Worked out great!

Did you cut the Y pipe back to the ******?

I actually cut the old ****** off, and welded in a 3/8" thick three bolt collector ******. I'd seen ATX and V8 flanges flex and leak, due to the two bolt design and thinner material. I figured as long as I was there... :)

I've been running a 2.5" single muffler setup for years. The first thing I remember noticing when I replaced the stock exhaust was how much stronger it pulled when the secondaries opened up. I strongly suggest using a straight through style muffler over a chambered one, as chambered mufflers tend to sound kinda putt-putt-putty to me.

In the near future, I'll be lopping off the flowmaster I've got on there, throwing a custom 24" magnaflow rotator in the midpipe and probably going without a muffler. I'll have to see how that sounds.first.
