Has any one ever attempted a single exhaust mod on their SHO?? I mean, If fast cars like a Supra Turbo or an RX7 have single exhausts exits at the rear??? I love the way Maximas look with the single pipe after market exhaust....

There are SHO's out there with single exhaust setup.
The only one's I've seen are blown SHO's, but I seem to recall others trying it on their n/a cars.

polished aluminum exhaust? it will most likely be polished steel. and there are other fast cars with single exhaust too, camaros, firebirds, the SHO has single exhaust too. Good luck with yo project.

Every factory SHO has a 2-1-2 exhaust setup. 2 pipes converging into one, then splitting into 2 again. Technically, a 'single' exhaust.
Supras also have like a 3-4" full length exhaust, don't they?
I would imagine if you changed the SHO to a single exhaust you'd have to use larger diameter pipes than stock.

I was supposed to have it last year, but Bruce(SPT)bailed on me.I`ve now found another connection at a muffler shop, and will be going to a single next spring.I just like the single look,it has no performance value.

I have a single exhaust. It took a little experimenting, but I finally HAD something I liked. I went with 2-1/2" aluminum, straight through a single Dynomax Bullet muffler. It made a bit of power up high, and of course, lost an equal amount down low. But it was pretty loud and raspy. I mean, REALLY raspy. I only drove it like that for about 10 minutes. Just long enough to get to Kragen, to get a Cherry Bomb, which is currently serving as a resonator. This setup was pretty nice. It sounded good. Even at high RPM. But then, I got my SS y-pipe. I found a lousy combo here! It is back to raspy again. It's bad! Once I get past 4500 RPM, it sounds pretty damn nice, but that mid range sounds ******! Plus, the fact that the SS pipe coupling (or the way it was put on) destroyed the front part of the pipe. The donut gasket dsintegrated on one side, and the pipe (aft of the coupling) has a crack 2/3 of the way around it. This does not sound good either. So tomorrow, I should be putting a different resonator and maybe a ****** muffler on, and hopefully getting the crack fixed. I'll let you know what it sounds like, when it's done.

Some people (I won't mention the SHOps name) say that I will lose power without the 2-1-2, but I figure that once the exhaust is in one pipe, it can come out one pipe. And as you probably noticed by the fact that the muffler is hidden, I'm not one for a big flashy exhaust. A long as it works, and sounds good. One of the things that I had going for me, was the fact that my mufler shop was willing to work with me, for trial and error. (mostly because he was a Huey crewman, and I walked in in a flight suit)

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

By the way, my whole exhaust cost me about $130 for the original setup + ~$20 for the Cherry Bomb + a few here and there for repairs on the crack.
(+ whatever I will end up paying for the new muffler)

Gary Morrell said to me a while back that the key to a good sounding SHO exhaust is a good single setup, 3" diameter **heavy-gauge pipe** after the Y, with a good 3" in/out stainless pack resonator and a bullet muffler. I have not tried it myself, but will take Gary's word over any other.

I am strongly considering going with that setup. But would 3" be too big, and wreck what little torque I have? Also, what if I can't get stainless? Will aluminum do? How about using a ****** muffler, as I've heard good things about those and anti-raspiness.
If someone could have Gary contact me on this, I'd like to talk to him. [email protected] or (619) 227-9429.
Thanks a lot.

why would the exhaust have to be bigger??? from the y-pipe on my 90 is 2½ (stock) and if that wasn't enought y did ford put it on? the only thing difference is that u have two mufflers and a bit more pipe to go thru and thats it. 2½ would be enough for a for a stock or a light moded sho. there's no need to go bigger.

the reason you would go bigger is for the exhaust pulses. On a heavy gauge pipe, they will be harmonized more, yielding a better sound. That's why thin gauge pipes sound "tinny".

It would seem to me that whatever the diameter is after the Y-pipe should be sufficient through to the tail pipe. As for why ford bothered with the expense of a 2-1-2 system. Prolly so the idjit sales guys could say that it had a cool dual exhaust system. I think it is purely cosmetic. It does look cool though, until you put them monster ricer fart cans on!!! Right, RI?

See, the thing is that those monster rice fart cans and "coffe cans" like some people say are infact achieving the sound of performance that so many SHO drivers want. There is a big difference when an exhaust that sounds and looks that way is put on an SHO and on a 110 hp civic... I don't hear any thing I want to hear from edelbrock and dynomax, ravin and all of those mufflers.... I have the performance to back it up and I think a single exhaust set up using a REAL Apexi N1 muffler would look really nice......

I'll be getting a single exhaust setup done hopefully later on next week. I will be using the 3 inch pipe if my shop can bend it. My problem will be in chosing a muffler. I am set on a glasspack resonator, but what kind of muffler works best in this application. I like the Bullet, but wont that be a little too loud.

Since I'm not looking for a huge HP gain from an exhaust system, I just want to find a combo that doesn't sound like ****. Someone mentioned ****** Mufflers, so I might try one of those. Since I have the go-ahead from my wife, I may try a 3" with and without a resonator. (w/ a ****** ****) I'll let you know how it sounds/performs.

From my experience I would leave the resonator on are fit a small glasspack in its place.

Here is a clip of my exhaust w/out the resonator, SS Y-pipe and Don M. mufflers.

Pretty bad eh?

In the next week or two I will have a comaprison between my old and NEW setup.
