I was searching around for some new front brake pads on my 95 SHO. I currently have the Gen 3 upgrade with NAPA premium rotors and pads. The pads have held up very well for what its worth. I am seeing a bit of brake fade above 80mph when I decelerate faster than normal. So I was looking around for a suitable upgrade and I am a bit confused.

Looks like the only option I have for my Gen 3 front brakes are the hawk HPS pads.

The Hawk ceramics are listed for 96-2000 Ex. SHO

The Hawk Stage 3 pads are listed for "1989-2007 Taurus (all motors) with SHO Source Stage 3 brakes (12" and 13")"

The EBC pads are listed for "1989-2007 Taurus (all motors) with SHO Source Stage 3 brakes (12" and 13")"

So the only option for my brakes are the regular Hawk organic pads?

Looks like you can get the Hawk HPS for the 96 upgrade from SHOSource. Also, SHONut carries Carbotech Bobcat and Panther Plus pads for the 96 upgrade. I thought EBC had something for the 598 size, but I don't have the time to look.

For the 96 brakes, the best we have is the HPS.

We can get pads from EBC, but in the 96 style pad they only make Ultimax and Green Stuff. I don't know how they compare to HPS, but we can add them to the site if you want a set.

Sounds like you are due for one of our Stage 3 kits so you get a better pad selection

I donb't have to tell you the braking improvement over the 96 kit is phenominal.

Yea I'd like to upgrade to a bigger kit but I just threw on my chromies with some new summer tread... not to mention my gen 3 brakes are less than 6 months old.

However, after my 3.2 SSHO (super super high output) build is done, I imagine i'll need a bigger brake to slow my SHO down after seeing a state trooper up ahead... Err... Just before that 90 degree turn at Heartland Park Raceway. :theyareontome:

What is the difference between Ultimax and Green Stuff compared to EBC's Yellow Stuff and/or Hawk HPS, HP, HP+, ceramic?

EDIT: I see that the stage 3 12" kit will fit under my chromies while the 13" kit wont. Why is the 12" kit so much more than the 13"?

The 12" stage 3 fits under the chromies really nice :angelnot::evilgrin:

But it is understandable that you want to keep what you have since it is new.

The 12" kit is actually a cut down version of the 13" kit. The extra cost is because we have to mill the rotors and machine a second set of mounting holes in the caliper brackets. As a side note the 12" kit is convertable to a 13" kit by just changing rotors and mounting the brackets in the original holes.

In answer to your EBC question. Ultramax are a normal street pad and the Green Stuff are more comparable to an HPS. Red stuff are similar to the HP+ and Yellow stuff are similar to the Hawk Blues. This is only a general comparison. I like both EBC and Hawk and they each have subtle differences.

I would look into some of Carbotech's pads.... some of them can run some very high heat

these are the pads I'm gonna try to run when I purchase my next pads, if I don't cheap out and get the PFC pads, cause the carbotechs get expensive

at the minimum I'd run the autozone PFC pads.... they can actually take a lot of heat, but the Carbotech's have some pads that will take more

I used to have PFC 11.6" setup on another SHO, and it handled high mph stops from the interstate at say 120 or 130mph just fine.......

OEM Ford pads are good. They don't fade and are only kind of dirty.

I'd highly recommend looking into Akebono street performance pads; got mine from Tirerack.com and just put a set on my other car along with new Cryo-stop rotors. IF you haven't heard of them, Akebono is THE name in brakes in Japan for racing applications.

My 95 currently has the 96 upgrade it with carbotech panther plus pads. The brakes are awesome on the track, and also pretty friendly on the street. They dont make any funny grinding noise when they are cold, and the hotter they get, the better they stop.

Ghost93, you mentioned that you have used the Carbotech Panther Plus (AX6) pads on the track. What type of track events have you run with them and have you had any problems such as fade, pad surface crumbling or excessive deposits on the rotors?

I have used the Performance Friction Carbon Metallic 0598-20 pads with the '96 upgrade at Texas World Speedway and Texas Motorspot Ranch on multiple occasions. The brakes have never faded even under heavy use with R-compound tires. I have used different rotor brands (incl Wagner and AutoZone) and types (smooth and slotted) and have had the same problem on each outing. The rotors get a thick and visible buildup of carbon that causes rough and uneven braking forces. I suspect the brakes are exceeding the pad's temperature envelope.

I see on Carbotech's website the availability of all of their compounds in the 598 size for the 1996-1999 (all Gens, actually) SHO. However, I have not seen these options listed at any distributor. I am interested in the XP10 compound for the '96 upgrade front brakes for my next TWS outing later this month. Any detailed feedback would be appreciated.

Hey Scott, I just bought the car about a month ago, but I have ridden in this car with r compounds at Gingerman. The previous owner also tracked the car at Road America and said on the fast strait he saw 140mph. The ax6 actually makes a very street pad as well as race pad, but it is very tough on rotors. I'm not sure where Dave got the pads from, I think he ordered them directly from Carbotech.

IIRC these are napa rotors, as you can see they are very deeply grooved and also cracking pretty bad. The car's braking is pretty well balanced as is it right now, with stock solid rotors and stock replacement pads with bias plugs. I plan on stepping up to 13" Cobra brakes with the same pads in the front, and 11.6 rear upgrade in the rear. I am hoping the bigger rotors up front will keep the cracking on the rotors a little more dormant. If you want more of a users experience of these brakes, you can try sending a pm to Dave, FREAK SHO. Im not sure how much hes on the forum anymore, but he is the previous owner.
