I just had my starter replaced today on my 1993 SHO "ATX", and the mechanic told me that the only way to get one was through a Ford dealer... I needed the car to get to work, so I didn't question him and just let him fix it. The starter cost me $230.00... I am just curious to know if it "IS" actually only available through Ford??

93 should be available at any parts store, or it is a 1 day order, tops. There was one parts store near me that had one, but it like $179, and if I waited 1 day for one to be shipped in, it wae $129. Popping the clutch on my car 3 times was worth $50 to me.

yeah the sho specific started is costly. but...if you do buy it from a local parts house, they should include a lifetime warranty.

I figured that I could grab it from an auto store... I was in a rush to get to work, and didn't have time to check on it. I told the mechanic (Just fix it)... He said he called all over St.Louis and everyone told him they couldn't help him. For all I know he could have gotten it from an auto parts store, and pocketed the extra $100

I'm the manager at our local Auto Zone and was suprised to find that we stock it (at my story at least) $140.00 approx with lifetime warranty.

Boston Auto Electric in Dorchester ( http://www.bostonautoelectric.com/ 617-282-1444) sells them for ~$80 + core with a lifetime warranty. In the rare instances that they don't have them in stock they will also rebuild yours within a couple of hours.

For those who might be interested they charge ~$140 for MTX alternators and ~$200 for ATX alt's (they can also wind to 150 amps).

The Gen Is are lucky. A remanufactured Ultima 03-0399 with a lifetime warranty from O'Reilly auto parts is only $62.99.
