Well I've finally gotten to the point where I can think about buying another SHO. Now that I'm in Southern California instead of Alaska, I have to worry a lot more about emissions testing. I've found several SHOs that look to be in good condition, drivable, but failed emissions for one reason or another. Most of these SHOs are being sold for $500-$1000.

So I suppose my question is twofold: how hard is it to get SHOs in general to pass CA emissions, and how difficult (and expensive) would it be to fix a non-passing SHO?

Thanks in advance, this has got to be one of the best car-related forums on the Internet.

ya u can either start by swapping in new cats and O2 sensors or just find a guy who knows a guy who'll test it for u with out feeling obligated to let the comp auto send it to the state like its supposed to... ur best bet would probably be shocal... ive read a few guys who have needed to take off their s/c to get it tested...

New cats, 02 Sensors and pull the spout connector and you should pass.

If your looking for a SHO, I know of one for sale for 800 Bucks. Runs perfect, Tons of Maintanence. Has 208k but runs real good. It pulled on the SHO Pictured below. It has a real straight body but a nasty purple paint job (You can get a Macco paint job for cheap) and has passed smog. Newer clutch to. 800 Bucks, PM me if your interested. My friend Jay is selling it, Its in Riverside.

A SHO with good cats, O2 sensors should pass. If the NOX is a little high, pull the spout. My stage 1 cammed, header equipped SHO will pass with the spout pulled.

what is the spout? sorry still learning about these cars

The spout is a small grey plug near the ECU test connector on the passenger side of the engine towards the firewall. Removing the Spout cause the timing to be static at 10 degrees which helps lower high NOX readings. It will cause the HC to go up slightly. With the stage 1 cams and headers my current tune causes the engine to run lean so the NOX is high.

This is an interesting topic. When I had my 91 Plus, I could not get it to pass the NY dyno inspection at all. The worst part was that I was working at the dealer at the time and "I" was the inspector :). No matter what I did, I could not get the NOx low enough. What I couldn't understand, was why the car looked like it had a place for an EGR, but had none. Considering the job of the EGR is to lower combustion chamber temps and reduce NOx, this was very odd.

I tried every trick in the book, and the one that finally worked was I pulled the airbox top off and place a shop fan about two feet from it, blowing into it. I guess the cooler intake air from doing that lowers the chamber temps down and the car JUST passed.
