I have had a handful of Mustangs such as 68 coupe, 83 gt, 86gt, 87 gt, and 88 lx coupe. I have had a 95 Lightning and 01 Lightning. Now the Taurus Sho. While these might not have meant anything to someone they meant everything to me..each one of them had something special I liked. I treated them all the same

Several ways of looking at this, non right or wrong, each to their own choice. I’ve had many years of Corvettes sitting in the garage waiting for the perfect day to get out and stretch. I now look back and regret it didn’t take them for full time pleasure or at least more than I did, now that they are merely history that I can’t relive. Also after the passing of a couple close friends who did the same and never got to enjoy their toys to the max, I’ve made my sho a dd and I enjoy it every time behind the wheel. But to be exact, for some road trips I still rent a car in cases where I wouldn’t want to park my sho in strange cities or questionable locations.

I use my MKS to commute but the round trip is only 35 miles. In bad weather, I drive my 4X4 Ranger pickup but I do all I can to keep the Ranger clean and salt free, too. I keep my car immaculate and relatively low miles for myself - not for the next owner. My 2010 MKS still looks new after 65,000 miles and a few dozen trips down the quarter mile. Like jtreber, if we are taking a road trip vacation, we rent a car. I will not park my car where is is exposed to door dings nor will I take it on some of the roads that we encounter in national parks and other tourist destinations.

I also feel exactly like ShoShane. I have always treated my cars the same way whether it be an Ecoboost Lincoln or a Ranger Pickup.

Looking at this thread tells me that we are all different in the way we look at our SHOs. Our needs and desires vary from one end of the scale to the other. Let's not exploit and belittle these differences. That's not what this forum is for. For me it was simple math. I can't buy new cars on a regular basis. Acually I can't buy new cars period. My money is needed for college tuition for my kids. My car didn't cost 50,000 it was less than 20. Yes I had to borrow money to pay for it and still owe on the loan. The math tells me my car will be junk before it's paid for if I continue to DD. It doesn't sit. I use it after work and weekends. Driving a Corolla to work is a small sacrifice and something I have easily adjusted to. I'm flexible. But I'm just different that way.:)

The problem is this is an internet forum and everyone needs to whip out their d!ck and measure it (against others OPINIONS). So if someone disagrees with someone else's opinion, their opinion is wrong.

Like has been stated, there are really two practical camps that I see. You have one group of people that think the car is a nice car and it's pointless to drive it everyday to work and back on DD duty. These people [generally] aren't of the opinion to only drive the car rarely, simply not to put "worthless" cruising miles to/from work. The other camp is those that believe they have a nice car and want to enjoy it for what it is. They will drive it everywhere because they like the car and enjoy driving it.

My buddy and I commute about 30k miles/year just to work and back. I have drive my old Grand Cherokee to/from work because I don't see the point in putting miles on the car just for work. I have driven the SHO to work before. But honestly, when cruising on the road for 40 minutes I don't notice any significant difference or reason the SHO is more enjoyable. I'm literally on the highway with cruise control running and simply moving the wheel to keep it on the road. Both have AC and both have cruise control so they are roughly the same. Because I have that view, cruising to work is pointless miles on my SHO so I have another DD. I drive my SHO every other time I drive except to/from work and when it's winter. On the other hand my buddy bought a 370Z and drives it to work everyday. He drives it to work everyday because he bought the car to enjoy and gets enjoyment everyday driving it to work. When he drives his Jeep in the winter all he does is complain about how terrible it is and how much more he enjoys driving his Z.

But lets be real. He's not wrong for driving his car everyday to work. Because he drives the Z as a DD doesn't mean he isn't a "true" fan of the car. Because I don't drive my SHO as a DD doesn't make me a "true" fan. My Jeep has 250k miles on it, that doesn't mean I have "driven it into the ground." My Jeep gets cared for just like the SHO (except it doesn't have a garage spot). It's just two different opinions on when people get enjoyment from a car.

It's always interesting to hear others views, an no one's opinion is wrong. I bought mine to enjoy it, not save it for someone else. So I drive mine daily. I like driving it, it makes me happy, and life is too unpredictable to not do things that I enjoy. Doesn't mean it'll get "driven into the ground". On the contrary, with proper maintenance it will have a very long service life. And when I'm done with it, perhaps another "low mile sunny day car" from one of the other meticulous owners from here will be available and I can do it all over again :)
