I'm new to the forum, and mine does the hard start thing, starts up, rpm's go up and down, and give it a rev and its fine, only quit once.... BUT, It only does that maybe 10% of all starts.....

Also, besides from that, I just got the car less than a year ago and now it has the check engine light on, don't know if its been welded, can anybody look up a vin# to see if it has been welded in Eastern Iowa area(will setup something with Eric for that if it hasn't), It seems slow, (I cant do a burnout unless turning or, well, I just cant do one and I stopped trying out of fear of something). Is the torque converter supposed to make the car jumpy at 1400 rpms/that range??

And suspension, when i go over any bumps on my drivers rear tire, it clanks!!, steering to the left gives vibrations...

I really like this car and already thought about trading for a GTP but decided to keep it and do massive maintenance on it. I really dont have money to throw away by trading it and decided to keep it.

I want some opinions on what to do as far as fixing it...and where to get good parts for low money....
Here is what I figured so far...
1. Cams welded/ 100k tune up/ coils/ cleaned
2. Brakes need done, rotors are warped I cant stop well...haha
3. WTF is up with the suspension??
4. Tires
5. Tint.....subs.....porterize.....borlas......

Oh, and I never beat this car, ever since I learned about the cam problem, I never took rpms over 4500 or stomped on it..

Thanks, Jeremy

One thing to check is the throttle position sensor (TPS). You can look up www.v8sho.com and under the maintenance section it will give different things to look for with a fluctuating idle. It would be a good idea to pull the code stored by the check engine light.

You really can't figure out if the cams have been welded by looking up a vin#.
Burnouts are not a Gen 3 SHO's strong point. Besides, the transmissions will not hold up to it.
The torque convertor will lock/unlock quite a bit under normal driving. What exactly is the torque convertor doing and at what speeds?

Could very well be the Semi Active Ride Control sensors/struts. Common problem.

Good plan of attack. Better to take care of maintenance first and then mods second.

Wuzzer he has a 99... unless it's an early one it doesnt have SARC.

Mine does the same clunking, I think I need new struts probably but havent taken the time to check everything out.

Don't do burnouts, and take 2 hours and pop off the front valve/cam cover. Only need simple metric sockets and a clean place to work.

My car does some weird idle things but only when it's hot out. Also the SES light has been on ever since 5 miles after I bought it. I can clear it and it's on 5 minutes later. P1744 or something related to the TC. I know the tranny is on it's demise but i'll drive it like I stole it until it takes a complete dump. Then I can rebuild it with a Transgo kit.

Sometimes I feel bad for how hard I've driven my car. ESPECIALLY since I got Borlas's installed. It's hard not to.

Sounds like the TC might be getting weak. BUT are you running your climate control while your driving? Anything other than "VENT" will cause the AC compessor to cycle and in turn cause the TC to lock/unlock due to the added load on the motor.

And I agree with Mark about the burnouts. Not a v8's strong point. You will tear up the transmission doing that, even I don't do it and I have a very built transmission.

thats good to know, i've never really tried hard, and i won't then, i just thought with my bald tires it would be easy to get them to chirp, and when i've never gotten a squeal from them, i just think there is a loss of power somewhere then...

I'm thinkin my struts are bad then... I can get the car to bounce good when tapping the brakes at a stop... what did they do instead of SARC on the 99's then???

Does anybody know relative prices or good deals on anything....Struts, Brakes, sensors, coils, TC and whats a good all season tire for these cars??

I hate to be asking all these questions, but I'm just a little worried about total cost and what to expect...

Thanks

To claify some more... the ATX will cause you to loose up to 27% of your flywheel power so it will be tough to spin tires in a fully loaded 3400lb 180hp family car. If it happens it happens, just don't make a point of doing it.

The struts. I can make my car bounce by letting off the brake then applying it again. That is not a good intication of strut condition. park your car on level ground and go to each coner and push straight down, the best you can to directly over the stut mounting points. If the car bounces more than 3x large bounces to regain stability the struts are MOST LIKELY shot. This is only a quick and easy way to find out.

As for the other questions, its member dependant. Best hting to do is search and do some reading on this form as well as www.v8sho.com

Struts on these vehicles last a remarkably long time. The clunk could be a fair number of other things in the suspension system that at that kind of miles is doubtless in need of replacing.
