I have driven both, and prefer the rod, as do many. Cable allows you to move the shifter freely around, and is fairly long throw. It is easy and quick to slap it into gear, but does not allow the fastest shifting possible. It does not feel very sport-like either. Rod on the other hand is shorter throw, is quite notchy, and does not move around freely. With a little getting used to (at least over a cable shifter), you can probably shift it quite quickly, and it's a lot more fun.

The cable shifter linkage is hardly a reason to avoid a SHO. I have had cable shifters on both of my SHOs (1989 and 1991), but installed the Ford Motorsport rod shifter on my 1991 as my very first modification. The primary difference between the "feel" of the two shifters is the slightly shorter throws and more solid engagement of the rod linkage. The cable linkage has a small benefit in that it attenuates the vibration that travels through the rod linkage. It is not a debilitating feature to have a cable shifter linkage.

Compared to the rowing oar in my Ranger, my SHO's cable shifter is a dream. In my Ranger, shifting from second to third is a hit-or-miss deal. Sometimes it goes 2-1, sometimes it goes 2-5 (although 90% of the time it shifts properly). Kind of a PITA, especially when you're 30 minutes late for school and you're trying to get around a dump truck before the road narrows down to one lane... :p

Anyway, I've never been in a rod shifter-equipped SHO, so I don't know what I'm missing, and I'm not going crazy trying to get one. :)
