Hi everyone

im new to the SHO community and finally decided to make the jump into the amazing world of the SHO.

i have a 1991 ford probe with the 5spd mtx and vulcan engine with lots done to it, but the SHO has always been in my heart.

I finally got the SHO engine from one of the members here (93silverbulletSH0 ) from the arizona club that crashed his silver sho, i went to pick up the engine all the way from california and the engine has everything on it, all the wiring is intact all accessories, etc. the engine is in running condition and i guess has 170k miles on it and new rod bearing done 19k ago or so. my question is what should i take care of before putting this engine in??? i have been reading around here and it seems the weak part is the bearings and i have no clue about the best choice for the ECU

what else do you guys suggest, i plan on having this done in the next few months, since from my measurements i been doing the hardest part is going to mount it to the frame of the probe and fabricate some mounts. and i plan to stay N/A and see how much power i can get out of this engine that way.

thanks for any input

Manuel

You will want a pcm from the original SHO and wire it to run with that.

Guys who have done this swap in the past have always used the SHO gearbox rather than the Probe one, iirc the Probe one is even more fragile than the SHO mtx.

Sounds like the engine has had its recent maintenance, so as long as there are no obvious oil leaks, I'd just get to work on putting it in.

You have a Probe with a Vulcan motor in it? Damn, that in itself is a very rare swap; in fact I don't think it's ever been done before. I would keep the Vulcan and forget about the SHO.

If he is who I think he is, the swap is even rarer than you think. There is a 3.0L Vulcan-swapped Probe in California that is twincharged with an M90 Eaton AND Garrett 60-1 turbo. It's currently using a MegaSquirt ECU.

Either my sarcasm detector isn't working this morning, or Tom doesn't know that the Gen 1 Probe GT came with the Vulcan V6. :)

It's sister car, the Mazda MX-6 GT came with a 2.2L DOHC Turbo, IIRC.

Rotate the motor 90*

BUT! Make sure you rotate it 90 degrees in the correct direction. I'd hate for you to have to fabricate a driveshaft if the tranny ended up pointing out the front bumper.

Just a thought...

Hey welcome!

You might want to check out SHOCal

Where are you located I might be able to stop by and help.

The X2J CPU is a good one to use.

negative ghost rider!!! the 89-92 pgt came with the same 2.2L 12v f2t as the 88-92 mx6gt and 626 touring turbo/gt. as they are all three made off of the same mazda 626 platform.
the 3.0L vulcan v6 became a option in the ford probe lx after the 89 or 90 model year. the 2.2L 12v f2 was the base engine in all three cars:)
<---long time probetalk member..i've had 14 2g pgts,4 1g gts,2 mx6 gts,1 626 touring and 3 mx6 2gs..lol

Well, I was trying to be sarcastic but failed. I have never seen a Vulcan in a Probe, running or in the junk yard. My bad.

Carry on.

i want to know where this goes cause i have a friend who has a probe that well he wants to get rid of already lowered, rims and exhaust needs a new motor....ive been considering this swap for a while or a swap into a 5g prelude maybe a 3g prelude....more aftermarket for those cars, the only thing i really like about my car is the engine its such an exciting engine and wonderfully designed

Thanks for the tip on the ECU

here is my current setup

5061750056 large

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/506175/3

im still a member of probetalk and the tcca, i did one of those sticky post about the vulcan engine and mods for it on pt and had a huge post about about the built of the car and engine in PT and TCCA. i like my setup a lot....

but again i have always been a fan of the SHO

i know the SHO will bolt right up to the transmission i have, i actually have two of them one for back up. the only issue i can think of right now other than the custom mounts (easy to do and have a friend willing to cnc some for me for very cheap) and the custom driver side driveshaft (which will not be that expensive anyways).

since this is a non california sho engine, i want to know what are my options for the ECU and the LPM tuner. i dont wanna spend much right now on this part since i have limited resources and want the car to be fairly reliable and be able to act "stock" meeting that the stock dash board will work fine with the ecu. which will not be that hard in my opinion, only need to wire the warning lights and sensors the sho computer since the speedometer is mechanical that will not be affected.

thanks for your comments and ongoing help

btw i was not aware there were more than 1 running sho swap into a probe already, do you guys have links???

there has also been a sho engine put in a 626,same platform 626 as your 1g probe.
digging the white fds! i have a white 2g pgt and i've been toying with the idea of white rx7 fd rims...you sealed it for me!
iirc you can find info on the sho/probe swap on pt,the guy was from upstate ny,so maybe look in the nypoc section? or 1g performance section
