In a distance of less than 10 miles, my SHO stalled out 3 times. I noticed that my RPMs wasn't going past 2500 so I turned down the radio so I could listen to the engine and it was stuttering and HESITATING so bad. About a minute later, my SHO just died in the middle of the street. It started right back up, but did the same thing 2 more times. I could smell exhaust or gas but it wasn't smoking. I have notice that my exhaust tips are getting black **** on them. Does that mean anything?
I've heard that there could be a lot of reasons for this problem, but if I hook it up to a diagnostic machine, won't that tell me EXACTLY what is causing the problem? shrug

No. It will only provide clues to be used for a diagnosis.

Burning overly rich, stalling, could be a number of things from O2 sensors, coolant sensors, vacuum leaks, etc... Will need further troubleshooting.

97, eh? Have a look at www.v8sho.com for more V8 owners. Check into the cam sprocket issues, your's doesn't sound like it, but you should be aware of it.

Have you bought any suspect gas lately? It seems like you are having combustion issues. You might want to try some gas treatment. (about 2 bucks, available at most gas stations).
I just got a bad tankfull and that really helped.
But it could be alot of things and I am not guaranteeing that bad gas is what is causing this.
Have you had stalling issues before? You said your power wasn't what it should be, is this a new problem?

well then i doubt its gas problem. the only other advice i can give you is that is probably is the injectors. you can try fuel injector cleaner but I doubt that will fix your problem. it sounds pretty serious, if your car is still under warranty then just take it to the dealership and tell them to fix it. And you might think about taking it to a mechanic, not fords. and ask him to take a look at what the problem might be then take that info back to ford.
hope this helps.
